Neighborhood Drama (NBR)

Yesterday was quite the night. Last night DH and I ran to the grocery store, and on the way there saw that there were firetrucks, ambulances and tons of cop cars at the motel that is three block from our house. We thought there were too many police for a regular health emergency 911 call and wondered if something was going on. On our way back from the store there were even MORE police, stationed at various points around the motel, including two parked, lights flashing, on the street perpendicular to ours. They were out of the cars wandering around. DH thought they must be looking for someone, but we couldn't find any information on the news or anything.

Fast forward two hours and I suddenly realize that the helicopter I hear has been in the neighborhood for a long time and is doing circles. I had already stopped thinking about the incident at the motel but started wondering again. Finally on the news we found out that a man had been shot at the motel and that SWAT and the helicopter were looking for the suspect. SWAT was going door to door warning people that an armed and dangerous man may be in the area.

SHUDDER. Horrible thing to happen, and the victim was dead before police arrived. So sad! DH and I locked the doors and windows and took the dogs upstairs to the bedroom with us to settle in for the night, but outside we could hear several neighbors getting in their cars and driving away. We live in a very quiet neighborhood/town and while things like this do happen, they usually happen far away from here. They finally caught the guy this morning. Phew! Way to go SWAT!

  • Most large cities post their police calls online.  Heck, a lot of smaller ones do too, but they may be by county.  We always look up the local scanner calls when we hear sirens around here, and especially if we hear the ghetto copter out.

I have to admit that I'm surprised by your neighbors leaving.  Around here (Texas), we're very much a "protect your home" state, so people are more likely to make sure their guns are loaded and ready than to leave.  You're more likely to see neighbors calling the ones they know that aren't armed and offering to let them stay and the armed ones' houses for the night or loaning them a gun than people leaving the neighborhood for the night.  Our laws are also very favorable to homeowners protecting their homes.

I'm glad though that they caught the guy and glad you didn't know all that was going on until morning.  That would have made you even more nervous last night!

Our county has a very low crime rate, and most of the crime that does happen is petty theft and such. Sirens usually just mean car accidents. Our town isn't really big, and a lot of the surrounding towns are very well off. I have lived in Texas and know the truth of what you are saying! LOL. My dad answered the door late at night with the gun in his hand once to find a police officer there. The officer calmly asked him to put the gun down. In Utah it's quite different, unfortunately. People do own guns, but I get the feeling most really wouldn't be willing to use them. People do own dogs though. I have two large ones and have complete faith in their ability to scare anyone off.
