Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone else's LO really slow to embrace food?

We are almost to 9 months, which is why I am asking over here.  I can only get DS to eat yogurt, and maybe a little bit of veggie now and then.  RIght now, he just has lunch at daycare (yogurt and some puree).  He doesn't seem to like anything that we try, and I can't figure out how to make the jump to finger foods and things with texture.   I read about these babies that are eating table food and having three meals a day - he is nowhere near that!  Any advice?  Anyone else have a kid like DS?  Thanks!

I have no advice because my DS is the same way but I'm interested in reading the responses.

  • dd likes her purees and yogurt for the most part. when she was younger would be weeks where she would hardly eat and then the next week she would finish every last drop. and she is still like that actually.

i wouldnt worry to much on the finger foods either. dd is a gagger so we have been slow on the finger foods. she does fine with puffs, cooked veggies, and pastas but that is about it. and it took a good while just to get her eating those few things well. as long as your lo is a healthy weight and all that i wouldnt worry too much at this point. some babies just take more time getting used to solids. good luck!

  • My daughter just turned 9 months 10 days ago.  She was NOT a fan of anything but oatmeal for the longest time.  (Sidenote:  we didn't start solids until just before she turned 6mo old).  We would have to mix a puree into the oatmeal for her to eat it.  Otherwise, if it came at her on a spoon, she was not a fan.  And I still can't get her to eat yogurt.  We've tried.

In the last 2 weeks, she has been eating her purees - the ones out of the pouches.  I think, mainly because she can hold them and she's in charge.  She knows how to suck it out of there, so it works.

We also have beed doing puffs and cheerios.  I will give her a piece of string cheese and she will chew on that.  When I cut it into very small pieces, she's not a big fan for whatever reason.  So I just watch her close to make sure she's not getting a big hunk.

One day, it will just click for him.  But I would try the purees in the pouches to see if he will like those since he can control them.

  • DS has been really slow to embrace solids too. He is 9 months and no where eating what I hear other LOs are. It is hit or miss what he will eat or not eat. I offer him both purees and finger foods at every meal b/c I just want him to eat something. He seems to prefer bread-like foods for finger food...pancakes, toast, waffles, mum mums, puffs, bagels etc. He rarely even eats fruit purees unless it's mixed with veggies and oatmeal. I feel like his meals are really unbalanced b/c of what he will or won't eat. I will try other foods, but most of the time he rejects it. So I end up feeding him almost the same thing every day.

I don't have any advice other than keep offering. The pedi at his 9 month appointment said I should be offering at least 3 times a day. She said I should feed before nursing so that he is really hungry. This works sometimes but sometimes he just gets really upset. GL!

  • My DD is 11 months and its still a struggle.  She ate purees grudgingly from 6-9 months and then refused. so we moved on to baby led weaning and let her feed herself tablefoods that I break into pieces.  its still a struggle.  she won't eat any sweet stuff like fruits.  the only things she would eat are chicken, waffles, peas and rice. i do try to introduce something new now and then, but resort to the above everyday just to get her fed.  I'm a little worried about what happens when she turns 1 and will need to be weaned...
