Baby Names

Mac for a girl, really.

Ugh. Bad enough my SIL named her kid MacKenna but now she instists her nn is Mac and that is what she wants her to go by. Puke. I guess it is better than calling her Kenny that she once suggested.

Has anyone experienced a kid that they could never call her by her name? I only refer to her as baby or baby girl since I just can't call her that.

  • Just like my computer! Awesome!

    Poor kid.

  • I would call her MacKenna (hate that spelling BTW). That is her name so your SIL shouldn't have anything to say about calling her by her first name.

  • Mac? That name has terrible potential for teasing..isn't it primarily a boy's name anyway? And isn't a big one a burger (big mac, couldn't resist lol)?

  • Yikes. I have to say.....that is my computers name too! Must be a popular computer name!!  ;)

I have friends with kids named Makenna (the only spelling I have ever seen) and they only go by Kenna for short...which is way better than Mac!

I would just call her by her full first name.

  • I just finished a book where the main character was Mackenzie and went by Mac. It could be worse.

  • My DD's BFF is MaKenna and everybody calls her Kenna...Mac is just horrible...Sh'es a girl your SIL needs to understand that and not ruin the poor thing with boy nicknames

Are you by chance referring to a Nora Roberts book?  That's the first thing that came to mind.

  • I knew a girl in college who went by her last name of Mack sometimes, so I guess I'm maybe a little more used to it.  I still don't think it's a great name for a little girl, but there is the trend of using boyish nns for girls (Georgie for Georgia, Charlie for Charlotte, etc) so maybe that's what she's going for.

I agree that just calling her by her full fn is probably the way to go.  Good luck.

  • Just call her "Mac and Cheese" several times. After that, your SIL may be just fine with you calling her MacKenna.
  • my neice is Mackenzie and sometimes goes by Mack,  Macy or Kenzie.  But most people call her by her full name.  I think all of them are cute and they all fit her.

Bottom line, it's not your kid. Not much you can do.  Call her by her full name if you don't like it.

  • I like Mac for a girl...and I know a girl named Kenny. Yes, that's her full name.
