Question about the name Cohen

I was reading this post earlier and was wondering if it would get the same reaction with a slightly different spelling.

I would love your opinions

If she would have spelled it C O H A N, like George M. Cohan. Would it be the same because it's probably still originated from the word Cohen, or is it at that point just another surname as a first name. Thanks for satiating my curiosity

Re: Question about the name Cohen

  • I think people wouldn't know how to pronounce Cohan.  They will say co-HAN.  Or they'll think it is a typo for Conan.

Ironically, co-HAN is actually closer to the Hebrew word from which the last name Cohen is derived, which is pronounced co-HAIN.

But I don't really think it solves the problem.  Because when Cohan grows up and graduates college and decides he wants to spend a few years in NYC and introduces himself to people as "Cohen" he's going to get the same blank stares and strange reactions.

  • I would steer well clear of this name.

    Perhaps Rowan?

  • When you pronounce it, it sounds the same. Thus, still contentious.

What about Conan, Conor, Rowan, Callum?
