Decorating our "Foster Bedroom" - Need Help.....

Hey everyone.  I got our twin bed today (dark wood) from the children's home that we are fostering through (we are so blessed that they have so many resources for us).  Anyways, we have told them that we are interested in fostering young elementary school age girls (only bc we have two girls already and we don't really have any boy stuff).  Anyways, I don't want to decorate the room TOTALLY girly bc I'm sure at some point we will have a boy placed.  What would yall do in terms of decorating a room?  Make it girly or unsex?  I'm just having a VERY hard time finding anything cute unisex.  Also I was thinking I can get two bed spreads, a girl and a boy and can switch them in and out if needed but that would be limit me to other decorations....

What would you do?  Help!

  • Well, we have a boy and 2 girls in the same room, and it is kinda nothing lol

We got a bunch of stuff from ikea - it is like bright jungle animals.  Got the bedspread in that and sticker things for the walls.  Also got matching curtains and a cribsheet that matched

BUt, after Lil J came - and we knew he loved Mickey, well - we went out to Walmart and got an inexpensive blanket/comforter in that theme.

Then when Elsie came along, we really didn't care if any thing matched.

So, in the kids room, Lil J has mickey bedspread, green sheets, a ladybug pillow pet as a pillow, a spiderman fleece throw, and Cars the movie stickers above his bed.  As you can see - I really cared about matching LOL

I say get basic neutrals, and no theme.  So, maybe a basic stripe (in bright colors) or a solid such as lime green, sea blue, etc.  You can usually make "boyish" colors girly by adding accessories.

Something like this work for both

I liked the idea of doing basics, then having the child either pick something out, or learn what they like and get it.  It makes one more thing a bit more familar to them, and might help them transition to your home

yay - best of luck to you

  • When we first fostered we had two different bedrooms set up...one was yellow and more of a primary color scheme.  It had a crib in it, and was for any babies we took.  Then the other one had two twin beds in it.  I bought a red twin sheet set, a navy one, a light purple on and a light pink one so I could switch them out accordingly.  We painted the rooma green tinge kind of like the bacground of ths page.  Then I hung white curtains and put some gender neutral beach pictures up on the wall.  It was geared towards the older ages 2-5. I had matching quilts on the beds and they were a cream color with blue and a maroon color in them so they really could be for either sex.  Now at our new house we only have one room set up for the kids.  It has a white crib in it, a double bed and the walls are white.  I hung navy blue curtains up bc our first placement was a boy.  I have lacey white ones to hang if we have a girl.  Then I cut out a cute whale, fish and turtle part of a beach towel and framed it.  I put two beach pics up and the room is gender neutral, but I will fix it up more as different genders use it.  good luck!
