Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Mom and car seats!

So when me and my brothers were babies there were no car seat laws until my older brother was 4. I asked my mom what she did with us when we were little tiny babies. She said, we put lots of blankets on the floor and just laid you down there. OMG!! I mean I guess it makes sense being as there wasn't a "place" in the car for babies. However, this has given her the opinion that car seats are not necessary because me and my brother's turned out fine and we never got in an accident. She always loosens DD car seat straps because they are "too tight" and I can grab a whole bunch of it (not just a pinch) so I know DD is not tightened in to be safe! Basically, she tells me that she thinks I am overprotective and crazy for being so dilligent about DD's car seat. It drives me crazy! Which is why she won't be driving with DD in her car without me anytime soon! Just wanted to share my disgust with my mom...ugh.

Re: Mom and car seats!

  • I know a lot of older people who think that because they are fine, then it is ok. I think you are doing the right thing by not letting her drive alone with your DD.  This would drive me crazy too.  Good luck.

  • Get some stats about the number of cars on the road then vs now and how speed limits have changed. Add that with people talking on cell phones or texting and you have good reason to be "overprotective."
  • Wow.. there are pics of DH in the backseat of his parents car in a basket.. When I asked what happened if y ou stopped short or made a quick turn. their response was well if he fell over we just picked him back up.. I could not imagine bringing our baby home without a car seat!

I think all Moms are like that. My mother swears there is no danger in bringin out our two week old to a family party of 200 pple in middle of flu season. She thinks I am crazy and that Dr.s do not know anything!

  • OMG my mom is like that. She loosens Olivia's straps to the point that she can hunch over in the seat. And she keeps pressuring me to get a forward-facing one becuase she doesn't like not being able to see the baby. *Sigh* At least she only rides with her once a week...

  • My parents are the opposite. They said they think its so amazing that we have these awesome car seats nowadays!  They can't believe how unsafe things were back when my brother and I were little.  They said that with my brother they had a van and it didn't have seats in the back.  They put up a pack and play type thing and put him in it with pillows and blankets to keep him from rolling.  Its amazing how any of us survived!

  • luckystar, you are lucky! My mom's new favorite phrase is, "Well, I don't know how you survived without you around to tell me how to parent/keep you safe." Blech. I wish she'd understand the amazing progress in baby safety like your parents.

I wish my parents saw things like that! Luckystar you are indeed lucky!

  • My mom said when we were babies it was optional to have a car seat, but she had them for both of us. I just can't imagine putting DD in the care without one. Needless to say my mom is amazed by the bumbo, the boppy, the pack and play and as she says all things you modern mothers have, LOL!
