1st Trimester

Terrible food aversion? any suggestions?

Hi everyone!  I am 7 weeks pregnant and have been having HORRIBLE food aversion.  It could be something I normally eat, or just had the day before... I just begin to gag.  Once that happens, I can't eat anymore.  The bad thing is, I am not eating enough and I'm pregnant with twins.  I've had so many breakdowns in the past few days because I don't know what to do.  I've been craving a filet mignon and my wonderful husband went to get one for me today and brought it to work.  I was so sick when he arrived, my boss told me to come home.  Once I was home, I ate the steak and felt so much better.  I am also going to buy Ensure today for my rough days.  Any other suggestions on how to get healthy calories or tricks that worked for you if you experienced the same issue.  Thanks.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. Just eat what you can when you can and take your PNV, and you will be fine for now.

  • Have you told your doctor about this? I found that whenI was pregnant that I got violently ill from one of the prenatal vitamins. My doctor presrcibed a different type of vitamin and I was fine after that. Hope this helps you!

  • i had terrible food aversions as well in my first trimester, threw up every day, sometimes twice a day and lost 7lbs.  I was worried that I wasn't getting enough nutrients to my baby since i couldn't take prenatal vitamins either, but my doctor reassured me that if you were healthy before becoming pregnant, that your baby will get all the nutrients he/she needs from the resources in your body for now.  Don't worry, it will let up and in the 2nd trimester, you can make up for it by eating and eating lots of healthy foods for you & your baby.

Good Luck. hang in there. it will pass.

  • Thanks ladies.  I see my doctor next week and will definitely mention it.  My concern is (scatter brained, forgot to mention), I lost 10 pounds.  I will continue to try to find something that I can eat and maybe Ensure will help.  Looking forward to this passing.

  • Whatever you eat is fine, your babies are so small right now and actually don't get nutrients from the food you eat but from what nutrients are stored in your body.

I could barely eat in the 1st tri also and as long as you take your prenatal you will be fine. GL!

This!  And make sure to stay hydrated!  Drink lots of water or even G2 gatorade would probably help you with keeping your energy up. Hope it passes soon!

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much during first tri. I called the nurse's line the other day for my constant nausea and she said even if I'm living off saltine's and pretzels, its fine and not something to worry about right now.

  • I am going through the same thing right now. Its so bad I had to take a leave of absence form work. I just eat what I can. My doctor said the most important thing is to keep drinking fluids.

  • Thanks everyone!  I will continue to drink tons of fluids.  I started adding lemon to my water and love it.  I also bought Ensure and it went down really well.

  • Just eat what you can. Try to eat healthy (dont just eat junk of course) but your body is going to crave the things you need. I have been craving steak as well but its because your body (and the babies) need the protein and iron. Just make sure to get plenty of fluids and eat what you can and WHEN you can. Most of my sickness is at night so I am eating more during the afternoon when I am feeling my best. Its very normal for women to lose weight during their first trimester.
