WWYD re: 5 year old's summer camp with a newborn

My baby is due in May and I'm trying to figure out how to best keep my son occupied when she's really tiny.  School wraps up right around my EDD.

I have 2 camp options right now.  One he would prefer over the other (gymnastics vs regular school-based camp).  But the school based camps is 2 days a week for 3 weeks.  The gymnastics one is just one week (but every day).

I really like the idea of having some little routine for 3 weeks.  At the same time I know (or I assume) he'd prefer the content of the other, compressed camp.

WWYD? I guess I'm wondering if 2 days a week for 3 weeks would really be helpful to me or not.  Like if I should stop obsessing about the schedule aspect of it.

  • I'd go with the camp that interests him the most. . . and set up some playdates with friends a few times a week after the baby is born.

  • I didn't vote...can you not do both?  Maybe there are scheduling conflicts....

I have the same issue this summer, really want to keep my boys entertained with a newborn in the house.  Unfortunately, my 2.5 year old is too young for any camp, and he's going to be upset that his 4 year old brother is able to do a few :(  They are only 18 months apart, and he wants to do everything big brother does.  But I'm putting the 4 year old in a few things anyway (VBS, a little 3 day camp, and both will do swim lessons).

It's just expensive to do both.  I have a 2 year old, too and for that reason spreading out the camp seems like a better idea.  Of course I was stupid enough to ask him and he wants to do gymnastics.  But I could get around that.  Appreciate everyone's input!

  • Does he know what the regular camp entails? If I told my DS he had a choice between gymnastics and camp, he'd probably pick gymnastics because he knows what that is. If I just said "camp," he wouldn't really know what it entailed (i.e. arts and crafts, swimming, hiking, whatever).

  • Do you have any other choices?  Neither of those seem too great to me.

  • I went through this last summer- I had a 5 y.o, 2.5 y.o. and newborn.  I would definitly say go for the school camp.  It will give you a break every few days for a longer amount of time.
