Intro & Question

Hi everyone! I just got my BFP yesterday!! We've been TTC since June of last year, and I am super excited (and nervous)! I hope I can come over here and stay awhile...

Forgive me if this has been asked already, I've looked at the most recent posts and didn't see it... It seemed to me like (at least on the TTGP board) a lot of times when someone announced their BFP they said they got a +HPT and then followed up with bloodwork at their OB to confirm. I called my OB this morning and they said that isn't necessary, and they don't want to see me until about 6 weeks along for a prenatal consultation, then 8 weeks with my OB for an exam. Is this unusual?? It just seems so long to wait! I did have a preconception consultation with my OB but that was almost 1 year ago and it was really brief... I'm eating healthy, exercising, taking folate & DHA (trying to get everything else from food but maybe starting a more complete PNV soon), and feel pretty well prepared but I'm just surprised they don't want to see me sooner. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Re: Intro & Question

  • Congrats!! Yes that is perfectly normal.  Most people do not get the blood work and seeing your OB at 8 weeks is great.  Usually they will do a ultrasound at that first appointment to see exactly how far along you are.  Good Luck!

  • Normal!  My OB's office schedules between 6-8 weeks w/CNP for prenantal Rx, bloodwork, general stats and recommendations... then between 8-12 weeks an appointment with my OB and I'll get a dating u/s (depends on your doctor).

The waiting game is no fun...

  • That's totally normal! Anywhere from 6-8 weeks is typical for a first appointment. Some OB offices do two separate visits, one with the nurse practitioner for blood work, history, and urine sample. Then, you meet the ob and usually get an u/s. The waiting game was tough, but totally worth it to be able to see a little bean on that first u/s!

  • Awesome, thanks so much ladies!!
  • Hi ! I am in the same boat . Went to go see my OB yesterday for a confirmation and blood test . The Dr.  took my HPT 's( 3 of them over a week )  and  symptons  as confirmation but didn't do the blood test . She just did a  v/u to check my uterus and said everything was good    and to  come back  in 3 weeks .

  • Most OBs will see you between 8-12 weeks unless you have a history of complications or if you have no idea when you ovulated maybe.  Due to my health history, I have 6 wk, 8 wk, 12wk u/s prior to meeting the OB.  But I do have friends that didnt have u/s until 16-20 weeks... And for one, on her 20 week appt she found out it was twins!  imagine that! ha!

  • Totally normal!  My OB had me come in between 6 to 8 weeks.  I did bloodwork, did an exam and they do a pap smear if you don't have a recent one.  My OB doesn't always do U/S in the beginning if you aren't high risk and know when your LMP was.

  • I thought the same thing when I got my BFP, but today's tests are so accurate they don't need to confirm with a blood test unless there is something usual happening.  I go for my first on April 1st where I meet with the nurse for about two hours, taking histories and not sure what else.  Then at 12 weeks I get an appt with the doctor and get a physical.  Not unusual at all!  Congrats!!  :)
