What do you think of the boy's name Declan?

Just wondering...DH has this on the very short list for DS # 2.  I am not sure, but like the other 2.  I think it's just a bit off sounding...for America.  I am one to usually like a different sounding name too.

We have to stick to the Irish theme.  I vetoed Seamus already.

  • Declan is great :) Seamus, not so much :)

though, when I hear Declan, I think of The Commitments.

  • I know a guy named Declan who's actually from Ireland. I think it's one of those names that would work regardless of age. I say go to for it. :)
  • I LOVE the name! I begged my DH, but he vetoed it. Love, love, love :)

  • LOVE it!  It was on my super short list for both boys, and it got vetoed each time.  There is a Nestie that rarely comes on here that is married to one.  My mom thought it sounded like Duckling so I think you'll have pronunciation issues, but who cares?  I think it's a fabulous name, and if I was to have a 3rd (which I'm not), I'd be fighting for that name once again.
  • I actually really really like it.

  • Not that you're asking for more names, but a few others I like are Drake and Walker (that are kind of both in that neighborhood).
  • For Irish, how about Tiernan or Amon? Not a fan of Declan.

  • I think it's adorable!
  • You know it's growing on me, now that I am repeating it to myself. I never heard it before so I think it just took some getting used to!

  • LOVE!  Would use it myself, but I am a bit afraid of names that start with C or D.

I wanted Seamus SO SO bad, but DH vetoed it.  Also like Declan- though it could get teasing- but any name could, and I like Seamus, so who am I to talk about teasing names?

I like it and the nickname Dex.

    Me too.

Those were both on the list too, but not in the running now.

Its growing on me more and more too, that is why I put it out here, to get some feedback.  I vetoed it last time with B.

  • I love the name Declan. I kinda want to put it on our boys name short list (also sticking to Irish names). On our list: Donovan.

    (I like Seamus, I confess.)

  • I really REALLY love Declan! I love the way it sounds a lot! But then again I named our daughters Oona and Gemma ;)

Another one that I like is Coltan but not sure if it's an Irish name or not.

One of my all time favorite movies! I like it a lot too. The guy in The Commitments went by Decco, which is cute as well as Dex like pp mentioned. I've heard of a few little boys named Declan lately so it might be becoming a more common name.

  • I think you might get some pronunciation issues (I don't know how it's most commonly pronounced, for example), but I like it.
  • I like both Declan and Seamus!  DH made a pitch for Seamus as our middle name if new little guy shows up on St. Patricks Day.  I don't think I want to switch from the name we've chosen, but I think those are both good choices.
  • I like it! I was chatting with a mom at the park when we were stuck on a second boy name. She had just spent a couple years living in Australia. She suggested the name Declan, apparently is all the rage in Australia.
  • I'm big into meaning and it means "full of goodness". Can't go wrong with that! See now I am really on board.

  • Very cute! Goes well on a young boy or on a professional resume and it's not too common.

  • I really like Declan...there is a character in Emily Giffin's novels named Declan and I believe they do call him Dex for short. It also sounds really good with both your last name and DS1's name. The only negative I could even remotely think of is that the beginning is similar to you DH's name....but that might just be me and my need to have everyone's names different because my family is wayyyy too similar.

I also LOVE Murphy and Riordan....my DH has a good friend named Murphy or I'd be all over that one...and Riordan with your last name sounds so classic.

    Have fun!
