Need advise

I have not talked to my bosses about maternity leave yet. They did ask me when I was going to stop working. I told them it depends on the pregnancy. But I want to work as long as possible. They asked that I try to give them a 2 weeks heads up, when I start to feel like I can't keep going.

I work in a medical office. And I think they would need to hire outside of the office to replace me while on leave. My ideal plan is to take 3 months off. It would be unpaid. My question is, should I talk to them sooner rather then later?? Or any of you that are bosses/managers when would you like to know about an employees plans? I don't think they even have a plan. I'm the first one to go on maternity leave in my office. (besides one of the bosses)  Thanks!

Re: Need advise

  • I haven't gotten in to all the specifics with my office yet, but I did mention to my boss that I would like to make sure I don't take on any new tasks starting in August and that also starting in August I will gladly train others to do aspects of my job so that nothing falls through the cracks while I am out.

In your situation I would talk to them sooner just to make sure they understand that you have no real control over when you get to the point you can't work or when the baby comes and suggest that if they need to bring in someone else they plan to do that sometime in August to allow you to train the person if needed.  GL!

  • With DD#1 I left work mid-May, DD was born in June.  I went back to work in September.. It was perfect to me, if I were you I'd plan on leaving a month to two weeks before your due date. I'd tell your bosses that you'd like to leave at least mid Aug. You need to get your rest and get things ready for the baby. If you're worried about the plan talk to them about your options, I'm sure they'd be understanding. Good Luck!

I left work 3 weeks before DS was due.  He turned out to be 1 week late. I thought I was going to lose my mind from the boredom.  This time, I'm going to work until I go into labor. I agree with pp, tell them you don't have much control over when baby arrives and to plan to get someone in there in August for you to train.

  • I was planning on leaving work 1 week prior to DD with DS.  I ended up leaving 3 weeks prior because I could not handle 13 year olds any longer with out my blood pressure skyrocketing.  I was induced 1 week prior to my DD for hypertension so I am glad I left early.  I would go ahead and talk to them about it.  I have talked to my boss but plan to continue this conversation soon because he needs to have someone in place from the beginning of teacher workdays in August or he may as well sit on the end of a broom.
