Re: Cord Blood Banking.... are you doing it? Public/Private/other?

  • Delayed cord clamping.

We considered donation, but I'm not eligible due to some medication I'm on and very rigorous requirements here in Canada. I did research private banking, but don't feel that the potential benefit is worth the high and ongoing cost of storage.

  • I voted other.  I wanted to bank it publicly, but my hospital doesn't participate.  So I'm going to ask to do a delayed cord cutting.

  • I was going to donate, but due to my mother having breast cancer, they will not accept it.

  • I'm donating it, I can't find a reason not too. The cost private storage was too much.
  • I voted other. We will be doing delayed cord clamping.

  • I have weighed the options and associated costs and unless you have a family history of certain diseases, like leukemia, it just isn't worth the cost of private banking. In order to use the blood (stem cells), the recipient must be a minor, since the amount of blood is really a pretty small amount. Since we have no family history of childhood diseases, we will take our chances.  I have yet to do full research on delayed clamping, but I will finish my research and discuss this with my OB at our next appointment.

Yes  This, I also considered donating (but hospital doesn't participate) and private banking but I can't afford it.

  • We want to donate it but our hospital doesn't have a donation program so I need to work with an outside donation agency that will pick up the cord blood.

  • Delayed cord  clamping here, too.  Banking it is just way too expensive.
  • I was originally going to donate, but I wanted to delay the cord clamping as well.  A nurse at my hospital said that she didn't think they would conflict, that there would still be enough cord blood left in the cord that could be extracted for donation, so they woudln't conflict.  If so, I will do both.

I wanted to call the donation company just to check on this though...I am a little surprised that it's still possible to donate even if you delay the clamping.  But what the heck do I know...

This!  I voted other because I'm going to use delayed cord clamping if all goes as planned.  I've read that it is one of the best things for the baby and it just makes sense to me.  I'd like to bank but I'm on way too many meds (Crohn's disease, htn, hypothyroid, and gd) to take that route.  I feel comfortable having him get all those great t-cells and stem cells at birth through the DCC.
