3rd Trimester

Need advice for a friend of mine...

She is about 11 weeks pregnant, and experiencing horrible morning sickness and heartburn. She throws up Tums every time she tries to take one. She throws up everything, really. I didn't experience very bad sickness, and I take Prilosec for my heartburn which I don't believe is safe during the first trimester. I'm not much help, so I was wondering if I could get some advice from you ladies about how you handled these things...

TIA!

  • Tell her to ask her doctor for an rx for Zofran. Little miracle pill that is totally safe and REALLY helps with the nausea. :)

  • I agree with Zofran!

Although, I was sick like that, even after taking Zofran & Phenergan.  I thought I had a stomach virus and went to the ER twice for fluids.  The second time I ended up being admitted and was diagnosed with hyperemesis and had to wear a Zofran pump in my leg for weeks.  She needs to mention it to her OB and/or go to the hospital if she is really not keeping anything down (my dr said for 24 hours.)

Definitely!  I went through 2 prescriptions of this stuff.  I had m/s all the way until 20 weeks.  I still got sick, but not nearly as much without it.

Also, tell her to take her prenatals at night before going to bed.  It won't get rid of the m/s, but it should help a little. I wish I started doing that sooner, but it was something I didn't think about until a friend suggested it.

  • the only problem I had with Zofran was trying not to throw it up after taking it , it tastes really gross, other then that it was great, the other thing would be constipation,

  • If she happens to live in Canada, Diclectin is a life saver... but i'm pretty sure it's only available in Canada.. and a little pricey..
  • I had medication prescribed for me for my sickness. I was sick every day, all day up until about 25 weeks. IT WAS AWESOME. not. The only downfall was that in order to take the meds I had to eat a full meal....and that was sometimes super hard.
