Maryland Babies

***Daisyterp***

I thought I would FB message you with this question, but then I thought if I just paged you and asked you here other might get something out of it too.

With D, did you have a VBAC?  I couldn't remember if you had a CS with E?  I'm not PG now, but we are thinking when John turns 2 we will start trying so I've been starting to read things here and there about Annapolis Midwifery ( I think that is who you used?) and VBACS.  Friends of ourse used AM and they had a wonderful experience, she ended up getting an epi at AAMC after 35 hours of labor just so that she could get some rest for pushing, and then had her daughter vaginally 4 hours later.

I try not to get upset when thinking out my birthing experience, it was a combination of not standing up for myself, making wrong decsions, and just getting induced too early.  I really really do not want a repeat CS, I was so sick and shaking from the narcotics that I didn't get to hold John for hours and I really feel like not getting to nurse right away played a huge role in all of the latching/BFing issues we had right after.

Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated.

  • I didn't have a C/S w/ DD. I was induced & it was a long experience ending w/ getting her out w/ vacuum suction, etc.  After coming home and reflecting on the whole experience I realized how close I came to having a C/S, and I decided that if my 2nd baby only took half the 24 hours that DD did I would be able to do it w/o drugs, etc.  I did a lot of reading and watched the Business of Being Born and switched to Bay Area Midwifery when I got my BFP w/ DS.

Bay Area does most of their deliveries at AAMC.  I had DS in their birth center, but I was told that they only do 1 or 2 deliveries in the birth center a month.  I know that BA does VBACs and that they only do them at AAMC, not in the birth center. The MW who caught Davis has had 3 deliveries- one med-free, one w/ an epidural and one c-section (twins, which she carried as a surrogate I believe) and I know she does VBACs.

I believe the MWs from Special Beginnings also do VBACs @ AAMC.  I know that anonsouthernbride had her DS w/ them and I have 2 other friends who have delivered with them and been very happy w/ their care there.

There was a huge difference between my 2 experiences and I didn't know what a difference there would be especially in that immediately-after-the-baby comes out. DD had to be totally checked over by a NICU team in the delivery room because there was merconium when they broke my water & I spiked a fever while pushing and they used the vac to get her out.  I feel like I didn't get to hold her for a solid hour, then I nursed her, and then it seemed like she spent forever in the warmer in the room, etc.  W/ DS I got to hold him immediately, nurse him immediately and all of the newborn examination stuff happened right beside me on the bed.

  • Sorry to butt in. Daisy thanks for sharing that. My delivery  with Ada was similar, except I wasn't induced, didn't have an epidural, and she ended up in the NICU because of the meconium. It is nice to hear that you had a much more relaxing experience with your second. We are going to start trying again soon, and I am a bit nervous about the whole thing.

  • Thanks, Daisy, it was Bay Area Midwifery our friends used, I just made up my own name.  After hearing our friends experience and yours, I'm almost 100% we will go with them.  I understand that they would want to deliver at AAMC with a VBAC, it makes me more comfortable too.  The thing that struck me with our friends was that she had a labor plan and really didn't want any intervention of any kind, and the midwife respected that, but around 35 hours she said I really think we should break your water, I know it isn't what you wanted, but I really feel like doing that will get you to the final stage of labor, and she also rec'ed that she get the epi so that she could rest.  Our friends said over and over again that they really felt that everything the midwife did guided them to having the birth experience they wanted, when most OB's probably would have pushed for a CS.

Matilda, like you, the thought of going through what I did before makes me really nervous.  I try not to think about it, but I am very jilted over the experience.

  • Cooper I am just butting in here as usual. I really really like bay area midwifery the more I read and hear about them and I would seriously consider using them for baby #2. I just happen to like my OB a LOT and I have kind of developed this good relationship with her so I am not sure if I would switch or not. I also pretty much had the birth I wanted with DS so I am not as motivated to switch.....I just wanted to let you know though, I know a lot of people IRL who use the practice you do. While everyone likes the doctors a lot, EVERY.SINGLE.ONE of them has ended up with a c-section. I know that is anecdotal....but it still makes me go Hmm

So anyway......good luck when it comes time for baby #2 and I hope you get the birth you want.

  • I really don't know anyone who has been PG and delivered with CWC, so that is interesting to hear (and not that surprising to hear considering my experience).  I really like the OB I see there and the care I got through the PG was great, althoght I had  a completely normal PG, but I just want to do everything I can to aviod a repeat CS and I think that will include going with a midwife.  Thanks
