Breastfeeding

Does your 3 week old nurse on one side, or both?

I'm just curious.

We were doing both sides @ each feed up until a few days ago, and now he seems content to nurse just one side @ each feeding.  If I put him to the other side he'll nurse for not even 5 minutes so I know he really wasn't hungry ( I guess!)

Hes got enough wet & dirty diapers ( plenty!) so I know he's getting enough.

I did pump the other day and got 5oz out of the side he did not nurse on. So I would assume that since baby is more productive at getting out breast milk then the pump, he's getting at least 5oz each time he nurses....?

I think at 3 weeks it's a good idea to nurse both sides unless you have an oversupply and are block feeding to decrease it.  I have heard people say they nursed one side per feeding from the beginning though; so it does work for some!

  • I only nursed both sides during one of his growth spurts.  Doing one side makes sure they get the nice fatty hind milk.  If LO is content I would just keep doing one side at a time.

  • I always offer both, but usually dd just nurses on one side.
  • My DD pretty much always just did one side but now that she's older (6months) its more frequent that she'll do both sides b/c her tummy is bigger.
