Anyone have a fish tank?

I am on my way to buy a small 2.5-3 gallon fish tank with a pump and light.  It is a present for DD's 5th birthday.  We'll get the tank set up today and the water adjusted and then go back in a day or two for the fish.  Anyone have any suggestions for a hearty variety of fish that would be a fairly easy starter fish?  How many should I put in a tank that size?  Bonus points for fish that are "pretty" to look at, as this will be going in our family room.

  • I'd just go with a couple pretty goldfish.

That's a good idead for a gift- maybe I'll ask the easter bunny to bring us some fish :o)

  • Believe it or not guppies are really pretty.  Fantails & lots of flashy colors.  They're a little smaller than goldfish and aren't as.. dirty.  So less cleaning.  Just make sure you get all males or all females or you'll have your hands full ;-)

And for how many, 3 max for guppies, 1 or 2 goldfish.  Might want to do a beta by itself.  They're pretty, but boring.  They just kinda float there most of the time.

  • Ditto on the goldfish. They crap like racehorses and you will spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning the tank.

  • we have this pretty cool round 2.5 gal tank with a light that goes up the center of the tank ( so when u are looking down into the tank it looks like a donut)  The light changes color.

We got a beta.  you just cant kill that damn thing lol
