NBR- This baffles me

Davies Dismissed for Having Sex

Ok I get that the school has an honor code.  I'm pretty religious so I can't argue with that.  And I get that he signed this honor code and knew exactly what he was getting himself into.  What I can't wrap my brain around is how on earth did the athletic department find out he had sex with his girlfriend?  You know it wasn't just a one night stand who turned him in out of spite.  How can they go to a player and ask them about their sex life without proof that he has had sex (I read that he did admit to it when confronted)?  And you mean to tell me that he is the only player on the team having sex?

Discuss.  (we are college ball fans here)

  • They didn't go to him. As a fellow Mormon I understand what happened. He went to them. Its part of our thing. Its similar to Catholicism. You go and confess in essence. However unlike Catholic confession its not always a secret. Especially when it comes to BYU and the honor code. There is a disciplinary counsel in those types of cases.

I think he did the right thing by coming forward and admitting his honor code violation. You're right he probably isn't the only one having sex but he is being honest because he probably realizes there are more important things than basketball. Does it suck that BYU has had an amazing season and they probably won't now? Absolutely. But its not his whole life. Or any other players whole life.

Have you seen this video from ESPN about it?

ETA: I should also say though, he could have kept the details secret from the rest of the world. It could have just stayed as an honor code violation. End of story. But because its so huge people were asking what particular part of the code? Is it the coffee drinking? The alcohol? The grooming standards? Did he do something illegal? Because of that he admitted what it was. Which to be honest, in our religion is a HUGE deal. Premarital sex is a very big no-no.

I totally didn't know any of that.  Thanks for the background.  DH and I were having issues wrapping our heads around this.  So I'm guessing that this man who is getting punished is more honorable than many of the other members of the team (hence the fact he came forward).

    I'm feeling bad for BYU.

  • Also, the video you linked is way better than the one I found.  Thanks!

  • Hahaha I was wondering the same thing!  My husband just told me about this story when he called me on our lunch breaks.  I asked how in the world they would even know if he was having sex FOR SURE unless they saw him!

I also have a hard time believing that he's the only player (or student) having sex!  Religious or not, A LOT of people have sex before marriage!

  • I heard about this in passing today. I think it sucks that he is having to face such strong consequences but, he DID know what the consequences were, and to be honest, you have to respect him for doing the right thing according to his conscience and coming forward. If that's what he truly beleives in, then kudos to him.

I appreciate the insight too!  I posted my comment and then I read yours so I have a much better understanding of how the school knew!

  • I wish more athletes had that kind of integrity.
