So ladies, what do you think of this? I heard today on the radio that Mr. Davies' suspension was because he violated the honor code by having sex. I'm curious to know how everyone feels about this story.
Do you think he should be suspended?
Is this an enforceable rule?
Should he have lied?
I'm sure plenty of kids at BYU are having sex and it sucks that he is getting in trouble for breaking the rules and subsequently hurting his school's chance at the national title. I guess rules are rules and I'm glad that the school isn't playing favorites because he's an athlete but c'mon. Begs the question- why would he admit to having sex? Unless they taped it, how would they know?
I'm sure glad I didn't go to that school! LOL
Re: Brandon Davies and BYU's Honor Code
I'm against abstinence until marriage; I think it's healthy to explore your sexuality and make sure that you and your partner are compatible before committing to a life long union. I wouldn't look down on someone who chose to wait but I don't think it's very realistic.
That said, he knew the rules when he applied. If he couldn't live by them he should have gone somewhere else.
THAT said, I don't think it's an enforceable rule. And one's sex life is no one else's business.
Off topic; I HATED Julie but New Orleans was a great season
... to be in one of the nation's top basketball programs.
and, DENY DENY DENY! Like Bill Clinton. LOL
Of course it's an enforceable rule. He signed a contract agreeing to the honor code. The honor code is part of a larger LDS practice of the "Word of Wisdom" saying that you will abstain from alchohol, tobacco, tea and coffee among other things.
I'm also willing to bet that most students attending BYU who are unmarried are NOT having sex. Remaining chaste until marriage is a MAJOR part of the LDS faith. It's not just something you are told not to do. It's a major big deal to be un chaste. It's a private school supported by the LDS chuch-they have every right to enforce the honor code.
Pretty sure it was made very clear to him the rules DO apply. I say this becuase my husband and many of his family members attented BYU. I lived in SLC for a while and learned quite a bit about LDS culture and BYU is certainly a part of that. My husband is LDS as well. He says that atheletes get suspended every year for this reason-but for some reason they are making a big deal (newswise) out of this guy.
Its a big deal because BYU basketball was #3 in the country. Playing for a 1 seed in the tournament.
