Baby Monitors

So someone sent me a link to this blog of a woman who recently lost her 4 month old baby. The blog had me crying and hurting so bad for this poor couple. They think the baby had died of SIDS. It was a very sad story but the woman has touched a lot of people. I know the blog has been passed around facebook a lot. In a recent post she mentioned that she had wished she had this monitor, she didn't know it existed until a few days after her baby died. She wanted to share it with other parents.

I had never heard of this kind of monitor before and was amazed by the good reviews and how many said it even saved their babies lives. I thought I would share this because if I hadn't read that blog I honestly don't know if I would have came across this.
Has anyone else heard of this monitor? I know a lot of people have posted about how daunting it is to be a first time mom and to know what to buy, but I definitely think this is something worth the money.

Re: Baby Monitors

  • I have this monitor. It is AMAZING and has helped me sleep when I didn't think I'd ever sleep again. Last year, TWO of my friends from high school lost their 4 month old babies to SIDS just two months apart. I have never known anyone who lost a baby to SIDS... And in the span of 60 days, I knew two. It was horrifying.
i recommend this monitor to everyone... We still use it. Because while DS has grown out of the time where SIDS can happen, the alarm goes off if he tries to climb out of his crib and we are alerted he's trying to escape.

Glad to hear you like yours! I too had a close friend(from grade school though) loss her baby last year to SIDS. I really hope that this monitor will give me some piece of mind. And that's also a good idea how you use it to know if your son gets out of bed now.

  • That's actually the monitor that we are going to get.  The reviews on it are great, and I know someone mentioned the false alarms... many people said they appreciated an occasional false alarm because they knew that the monitor was working.

  • When I had DS the nurse must have sat with me and DH for an hour and discussed SIDS.  How exactly would this monitor help?  SIDS is unexplained and can't exactly be reversed.  SIDS also is not the same as suffocation.  If a blanket (which shouldn't be in the crib anyways) got in baby's face then I could see this monitor being useful but I just don't see how it exactly could save a baby from SIDS.  Not trying to be snarky, just something I've wondered for a while now.

SIDS isn't the same as suffocation but the monitor will work in either case. Once the monitor detects that your baby stopped moving (such as chest stops rising and falling) the monitor will go off alerting that parents. Here's a sample from the product description:

"The Angel Care Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor detects your baby's slightest movements, even while she sleeps. While it may seem that your baby is perfectly still when she is sleeping, she really isn't. The under-the-mattress Sensor Pad detects your baby's slightest movements. If your baby goes absolutely still for 20 seconds, the Sensor Pad sends a signal to the Nursery Unit which sounds an alarm alerting you to check your baby."

I understand what you are saying, I think that people are just using the name "SIDS" as a broad range at this point.  It wasn't that long ago that suffocation from blankets and body position were looped in with SIDS.  I think what most people mean is that it can help reduce infant deaths especially having to do with suffocation etc.

Personally, my sister in law had this and she thought it was wonderful.  I will definitely be getting it.  In reply to the fears of false alarm, the only time it was a false alarm is when she forgot to turn it off when the baby was picked up.  I think there are just some people out there that worry/have anxiety more than others and I think that this monitor really depends on your personal parenting styles.

  • I guess my point is if it truly is SIDS, 20 seconds after not breathing you are not going to be able to reverse SIDS and make it all better.  Maybe I don't fully understand SIDS but from what we learned when having DS it seems even something as wonderful sounding as this monitor, wouldn't help.

ETA: When I say wouldn't help I mean wouldn't help with SIDS.

  • my SIL had this with her twins and she loved it. my MIL could not figure out how to turn it off before taking the babies out of the cribs but that's because she can't really figure out how to do anything.
