September 2011 Moms

kinda bummed by my mom

So, we were visiting with DHs family, and his mom brought up the issue of coming down after the birth and helping out.  I was all for it, and knew that this was going to be offered, and I knew we would accept.  I was then talking about it with my mom.  She, too, offered to come and help, and on whatever schedule we decided.  She lives across the country, but has said that she will buy today, fly tonight (gotta love Southwest!).  However, I was bummed that she said that she wouldn't come until I was out of the hospital.  I had pictured that she would be there in the hospital, maybe not on day one, but that she would be there.  What surprises me the most is that she sometimes feels left out because DHs family lives close, so we see them regularly, but since my parents are across the country, we only see them once or twice a year.  I can't imagine that she would be ok with seeing all those photos of the first few days with us, the baby, and the ILs.  Am I crazy, or should I say something?

  • Definitely say something! I am sure she would be thrilled to hear you want her at the hospital! :)

  • well, there's only so much she can do while you are in the hospital.  i think it's fairly common for parents that don't live right there to not get there until after the 2 day hospital stay.  my dad and stepmom didn't come until ds was 6 weeks old.

  • My guess is that she's trying to avoid the logistical nightmare of putting the pressure on to be there that quickly?

  • I would assume that her line of reasoning is that she will get more time with the baby and be more helpful to you once you have been discharged from the hospital.

I would definitely say something if it's  important to you that she be there!

Also, my lives across the country also. I'm worried about the logistics of buying a ticket ahead of or buying one at the last mintue.  What is the buy today, fly tonight from SW?

  • It's not a special program, but the airports that connect her to me don't usually sell out their seats, so the prices don't drastically go up in the week before the flight (like they do with United, American, etc).  For example, if I go right now to look for flights for today, there is a non-stop for 219 on SW, but on AA, its 356 with two stops.  SW has just always come through for us in last-minute situations.

  • Thanks for all the thoughts ladies.  I'm going to simmer on it and revisit it once we're closer and are actually trying to work out the logistics of family coming to visit.  I guess its just not how I pictured it, but that's what I get for moving across the country!
