So I'm embarking into the world of 'mama made' diapers, having absolutely NO experience on a sewing machine (should be interesting), and I was wondering which patterns you all followed? I don't care if I have to pay for them or if they're free. I really like the look of the trendy fitteds, only in an AI2 (kind of like SBD). I was thinking like a Rita's Rump pattern? I would also like to stick to the concept of a OS and then make separate little NB ones for DS2.
What do you suggest? Or should I say, what do you suggest for a beginner?
Re: DIY Mommas- pattern ?
I use the Darling Diapers Unlimited pattern (referred to as DDU):
https://www.darlingdiapers.com/
It cost me $12.50, which might sound like a lot. However, it's an 84-page (I think) PDF with lots of tips and instructions, and you can print the pattern out as many times as you like. I really, really like this pattern. You can use it to make fitteds, pockets, covers or AIOs, and it includes patterns for soakers. It includes sizes from tiny newborn (starting at 5.5 lbs, I think) through large. I'm not sure about using it to make a OS diaper, though if you had a snap press you could probably just make a medium or large with a lot of snaps, which is probably what you'd have to do with any other pattern to make a OS anyway.
I've found this pattern to work really well for me, and I would definitely say that I'm a beginning sewer.
I tried an RR, and it will need a lot of modifications before I really like it. It was pretty easy if you know your way around a sewing machine. But I recommend you buy inexpensive materials for your first try (rather than some nice PUL or something). That's what I did, and I'm glad because there are so many things I'd like to try modifying on the next one. I don't want to buy nice fabrics until I make it into a style and fit I really like, plus I'm more comfortable to play around with the pattern since I'm not wasting a bunch of money.
Here's what it looks like when I followed the pattern almost exactly:
For my first attempt I used the Cloth Revolution pattern & instructions.
I use the Darling Diapers free newborn pattern now.
If you're interested in fleece soakers, I like the katrina pattern a lot!
I found that once I completed the pattern with instructions one time, I was able to complete the DD pattern with no problems.
I used the larger newborn pattern and added 1/4" extra all the way around to make mine more of a small size.
Next to a BG small
Hope that helps!
What type of fabric did you use? That diaper is adorable
I used regular woven fabric from JoAnn's (I can get three NB cuts from 1/2 yard) and the inner is bamboo fleece that I got from Etsy. It's $15.25 a yard (including shipping) and it's the best price that I have found.
I added a Twill-Tape tag to the back that I also love... the little heart on the back.
I've used the Rita's Rump Pocket pattern in the past, as well as Cloth Revolution. They are both OK. They work fine, but I don't love them.
I *do* love the Darling Diapers Unlimited pattern that a pp mentioned. I'm a beginner sewer and so I really need step-by-step instructions. RRP isn't good for that, at all. Cloth Revolution is excellent as far as instructions go, but I don't like the fit. DDU is also excellent, AND fits DS wonderfully.
I don't mind that it's sized. It's easy enough to sew up new diapers, and I love that I can easily make diapers big enough to fit even DD (who is 3.5, and is *just* now night training). If you're dead-set on a one size diaper, I've heard good things about this pattern: https://www.jemappellelavie.com/index_files/JMPNappyPattern.htm. But haven't tried it myself.
I definitely agree about using inexpensive materials at first. Wait on PUL until you're more comfortable sewing, as it slips all over the place and doesn't like having a zillion pin/needle holes poked in it Flannel is a great option when you're first starting out -- it's cheap (Joann's will have it on sale for $2/yard this weekend, or you can use old sheets/receiving blankets that you already have), easy to find, non-stretchy (stretchy fabrics like jersey are harder to work with), and absorbent!
