I discovered today that one of my students may be pregnant.
Get ready for it...
I teach 6th grade! SHE IS 12 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!
I wasn't able to eat my lunch today. Another teacher and I just stared (without staring) at her trying not to cry. She's "glowing" (probably sweaty from a hot flash), gaining weight, extremely tired looking, and looked like she could cry at any moment. Babies should not be having babies! Way to go Alabama abstinence courses. You're doing a great job!
Re: Let's hope this rumor STAYS a rumor
Holy shiit. If I find out Izzy is having sex at 12, she will be banished to the basement and home schooled.
and Louisiana doesn't even have basements.
I hope it stays a rumor too!
I had a friend in HS who had babies at 13, 15, and 17. You would have thought she learned her lesson but her boyfriend was a lot older and wanted kids.
Happy ending though...she's in college right now and her boyfriend is now her husband. They were doing well last I heard.
We aren't allowed to confront her because it's considered an illness. I also heard that she may be moving soon. Another piece of this rumor is that IF she is pregnant that her family said they'd ship her to Mexico to stay with relatives. That just sounds like a great solution to this horrible situation. How about the 7th grade boyfriend? What about him?!
It's been spinning in my head all afternoon and it's killing me! They're my babies and it breaks my heart.
ETA: This first paragraph was filled with sarcasm!
Our first family photo!
I know. Insane.
Oh my gosh! This is why I'll be teaching kindergarten or first grade...while they still love school and they're somewhat innocent!
That must be so hard for you, being her teacher but not being able to talk to her about it! She's still a child and whatever is going on, she needs to be able to talk to someone. That's so sad.
That said, I didn't even THINK about sex for loooong after I was 12. I can't even imagine.
I think stuff like this is a reason that I could never be a teacher. I could never hear rumors like that and not say anything to her. I understand the school's rationale and I don't really even blame them under most circumstances, but it's heartbreaking to think of a 12 year old girl experiencing emotions like this and basically having zero support. So basically I would be a teacher up until something like this happens and then I'd be fired because I wouldn't be able to not say anything.
Poor girl :-(
That's so sad. If it's true, I wish the best for her.
A family that my parents know just recently went through this. My mom's friend had her daughter when she was 17. That daughter (who was my age), had her daughter when she was 15. Her daughter had her daughter when she was 13 (pregnant at 12). You'd think the women in this family would have learned. So now my mom's friend is a great-grandmother already and her daughter (who's 33) is a grandmother!
This! Wow...I really hope it's just a rumor.

An illness?? You've got to be joking! (I know you're not, which makes it even worse.)
Do you guys have a mandated reporter law? In my mind, this would necessitate a call to our FL Abuse Hotline, given that in FL, she's under the age of consent. That would at least get her the help she needs and access to services she may not know about, ya know, given that she's 12!?!? Anyway, as a teacher, you would be a mandated reporter of suspected abuse and neglect in FL.
Oh dear lord. Stuff like this makes me terrified to be raising a girl.
This might be the craziest thing I have ever heard.
That's exactly what I said when my mom told me about it. The good thing is, they're a pretty well educated family. So hopefully they keep that family tradition going too.
THIS!!!!!!!! That girl needs someone to talk to! That's 70% of the problem. 12 year olds with adults they can talk to usually don't get pregnant or have sex at 12. This is so sad. So what happens at your school? Everyone pretends it's not happening?? Thank god for Canada's upfront sex ed programs.
This. This is statuatory rape even if it is by a 7th grader (although she technically raped him as well). Regardless, this needs to be addressed. Her parents have to be notified in case they are not already aware. I hope it is just a rumor, but I had a child on my case load once that's mother was 11 years older than her. Yup.
