Cleaning out a dishwasher

I remember seeing people post about what they've done to clean out their dishwashers but I've never paid much attention. The one at the house is a little skanky and I'm not sure what to do other than scrub it out or run a hot load with a boat load of vinegar in it. There's also some kind of food debris trap in the back (that's right, I've had it good and never had the pleasure of one of these before!) do I just pull out the trap to empty it? (oh and - barf)
