Ouch, sciatic nerve pain

Over the weekend, I started getting a sharp shooting pain off to the right side of my tail bone when bending ro sometimes even sitting.  I think it's sciatica and from what I have read online, the treatment seems to be rest, ice, and tylenol.  Has anyone experienced this and what helped?  I plan on calling my OB when her office opens this morning too.

Re: Ouch, sciatic nerve pain

  • I've had awful sciatic pain since the birth of my DS.  It is, of course, getting worse now that I'm pregnant again.  My doctor just told me last week that doing as much stretching and exercising throughout the day helps it.  He suggested that morning and night (at least) I do stretches to stretch out my legs, hips, butt, and back, and to do 50 leg lifts on each side.  The leg lifts on my right side (the side with the pain) are difficult and sometimes painful, but since I started them on Thursday, I haven't had an evening where I've been limping, which was what was happening prior to my appt.  I've also heard prenatal yoga helps.  If all else fails, you can see a chiropractor and mine was wonderful when I saw him pre-pregnancy.

  • I had it last time with my DS, and I have it earlier this time.  My doctor told me to curl my legs in towards my chest (leg stretches I presume), use tylenol when necessary, and to use heat.

  • I had it so bad two weekends ago I couldn't walk :(

I took tylenol and alternated heat and ice, then would get up every so often and do stretches --- pigeon pose and piriformis stretches seemed to REALLY do the trick. Avoiding soft chairs and tailor sitting (on the floor) helped too -- soft chairs seemed to raise my knees above my hips and aggrevate my nerve pain.

Tailor sitting is also a great posture to begin practicing for labor :)

My chiro suggested I use ice instead of heat.  Maybe see if that helps any more for you.  :)
