hospital bag...

For all you new moms out there, what do you really need to pack for your hospital bag? Any suggestions/essentials we shoudl know about?

Re: hospital bag...

  • Lip balm!! My lips got really chapped.

  • Buy a pack of Hanes granny panties in a large size. Sweat pants. Shampoo and stuff because if you're up for it, you're going to want to look pretty. Pen and paper. There is so much paperwork and writing stuff down (like breastfeeding logs). 2 nursing bras. Cell phone charger.
  • My suggestion is to pack everything you think you may want or need.

The hospital isn't like an airline, they won't charge you for overpacking or weigh your bags at the door.  If worse comes to worse, you can have DH put stuff out in the car for you.

Nothing cracks me up more when people get their panties in a twist over people packing "too much".

FWIW, having my own clothes, underwear, towels, and toiletries made all the difference for me.  I loved feeling like myself and not a hospital patient.

ETA: a folder and a pen! There are so many papers to keep track of.

  • I hardly grabbed anything because I had no idea I would be staying. I made my DH bring me.

Shampoo, conditioner, soap, razor, lotion, chapstick, comfy clothes, slippers/flip flops, hair clips.

For the baby: going home outfit, blanket, hat

  • Well if you're packing for DH too don't forget shoes! ?DH rushes from work in big army boots and we were there a week and our hospital was an hour from our home.

  • lip balm, soft toilet paper, extra batteries for camera, my own comfy clothes, pen/paper, bags/boxes to bring home anything (gifts, flowers, etc), comfy panties, nursing bra, pads (hospital ones were sooo bulky, I wish I had of had slippers.. I packed alot and everyone thought I was crazy, but honestly, you just don't know what you are going to want or need. Pack whatever you think you may need to feel comfortable, and if you don't use it then oh well, at least it was there if you needed it. Also we ended up staying longer then we thought so it was nice to have overpacked.

  • Lip balm. This was my super important thing i needed. Once I was allowed to shower, my own toiletries were fabulous to have. Snacks for you and your coach. Nursing bra. Going home outfit for DC. A human sized towel for your shower too!

Forget bringing your own gown.  It will get thrashed.
