Name Question (again)

I posted a few days ago about Kylie even though my DH goes by his middle name of Kyle.  He suggested we spell it Kiley so it doesn't look so similar to his name.  What do y'all think?  Would that spelling make it less like Kyle, Junior?  He has always been worried that people would think we were naming her after him.  (This pretty much stems from a lady we know named Royette after her father, Roy.)

I want to use my paternal grandmother's middle name, Nell, for our daughter's middle name.  Several of you ladies thought Kiley Nell was cute.

I am asking again because we both like Kiley but we don't want everyone thinking that she is named after her father.

Re: Name Question (again)

  • I really don't like the "Kiley" spelling. I also don't see the problem with it being similar to Kyle. Most people (other than family) probably don't even know your husband's middle name is Kyle.

ETA: I totally missed the point that he goes by Kyle. Sorry.  In that case, if you're worried about it being too similar, no matter how you spell it, it's going to be similar and sound even more similar. So if that's not what you want, I would choose another name.

  • In general, I like the name Kiley (however you'd choose to spell it), but in your situation I would choose another name.  It seems like you're very self-conscious about others' impressions and would end up saying "Hi, this is my husband Kyle, and my daughter Kiley...but she's not named after him" often.
  • If you like the name go for it.

  • I personally prefer the Kylie spelling to Kiley ( have you thought of Kyleigh?).  I would say name your baby what you would love to hear over and over again!  Not to be snarky but, does it matter what people think is the reason behind your name choice?  Our family knows the meaning behind the name we chose, but I don't expect others to listen to the story of the names' lineage.

However as PP said, if it will bother you every time you hear her name, than pick another.  I kind of like Nell as a first name.  But that's just meWink

    Agreed

  • I really like Kiley Nell but see your concern... my mom's name is Lisa, and my dad spelled my name Lia because that was the only way he had ever seen it spelled. We got asked often if it was some sort of junior thing a lot. It never really bothered me because I thought it was a dumb question but it really bugged my parents. I remember my dad even saying that if he had realized that in all the other stuff going on at the hospital, they would have come up with a completely different name. If its something that is going to bother you, you should probably come up with another name because it will come up.

  • If you're going with the name, definitely Kylie. No matter how you spell it, it sounds like Kyle, so people are going to assume it's some sort of tribute to your husband. If you love the name and are OK with that, then go with it. Changing the spelling isn't going to change the impression it might make (which isn't a bad one...just one it sounds like you don't want).

  • I grew up with a Kaili.  I also agree that any way you spell it, it will be very similar in sound to Kyle.
