If one more family member says.......(venting)

If one more family member tells me that they didn't start wearing maternity clothes until 5 or 6 months I am going to scream!

My mother and a few of my aunts keep saying I can't believe you are already starting to wear maternity clothes I didn't have to wear them until at least 5 or 6 months at the earliest.  Are you sure you aren't gaining to much weight?  Really thanks that's exactly what I want to hear.  URGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  Ok thanks for listening to me b!tch

  • Wow, I think if I were in your position, I would try to politely (as hard as that may be) say that you are wearing clothes that are comfortable and your weight is being monitored by a doctor. I would ask them to stop with the comments. But that's just me... like you said, exactly what we DON'T want to hear right now!

Exactly!  I've only gained 7.  And I would like to say the clothes back then were very different! Cool

  • Oh I hear you. My Mom said she didn't show at all until 5 months and she left the hospital in her tight skinny jeans. I said, well I was told to be prepared to look 6 months pg and bring maternity clothes to go home in. I am like ? I said, Mom-You were like 21. I am 31. It's kind of like unnecessary expectation. I am working out, and eating as healthy as I can so that is the best we all can do. All women are different! :)

  • I'd probably start slapping people.... LOL.

My co-worker told me this week that when she was pregnant everyone avoided maternity clothes for as long as they could because they were all so horrible and just big tents. I think now we are blessed with cute fun maternity clothes and we aren't dreading going shopping for.

I am happily wearing my maternity jeans right now.. I have a maternity top on but it's one of the one's from Old Navy that are rouching on the sides, its not a 'big' maternity shirt. I had to buy pretty much all new shirts because my boobs out grew my old tops.

What is wrong with people! Some stupid coworker said, in a way I interpreted as rude, "You are awfully big to only be 13 weeks along." Think before you speak people!

  • You also have to remember that people who are older wore maternity clothes that we way different.  We wear things much tighter now and show our bump, but back then, they wore huge things to cover it up.  So of course in the 80s and 90s when bigger clothes were popular, they didn't need mat clothes right away.

  • I bet PP is right that the clothes were so ugly, you didn't want to wear them.  My attitude is, if we're uncomfortable in our regular pants, why bind ourselves into them and suffer? Maternity pants are such a sigh of relief, I see no point in avoiding them just for date's sake.

  • I was just talking to a pregnant friend about this a couple of days ago.  I don't understand why people choose to have so many comments for pregnant women or women who have just had a baby.  It's hard enough to have your body go through all of these changes then to hear all of these terrible comments.  I have tons of stories when I was pregnant with my DD. I actually gained 1/2 my body weight with my daughter so there were tons of things to say. So far, I've just had one but I am carrying very differently this pregnancy then I did with my DD.  Yesterday my Mom commented that I finally look like I am pregnant...she was very excited. My grandmother (who is not the typical grandmother and is very judgmental especially regarding looks) told me that I just look like I gained weight rather than am pregnant. I told her I am almost at the halfway mark and have only gained 3.5 lbs.  I then went on to say that the dr. had not been happy that I hadn't gained weight until this weeks appt.  My Mom was annoyed by the comment too and said to try not to pay attention...that's hard though.
  • I'm a size 18 to begin with, and I had gastric bypass in 2009, so I was sort of frightened about gaining weight with the pregnancy. I am 4 months and am showing.

If I hear, "oh my god, you look so big!" i am going to cry. that is NOT what i wanted to hear

I'm a size 18 too, and short to boot. I have a few close friends/ family members that are pregnant & a few who've already had their kids. On the phone with my grandma today, she says "why not ask [pregnant cousin] for her maternity clothes? she's having her baby in 8 weeks!" to which I said, "because she's smaller than me?" [grandma pauses then says] "Well I don't know about that. She looks like she ate a beachball, and the ball got pregnant. She's huge".

Then she suggested asking my SIL for her old maternity clothes (most of which she still wears, smallest baby just turned 1 but she has 3 under 5. SIL is size 12 & about 9 inches taller than me)

"I don't think so, grandma. I'll get my own. It's okay."

    LOL.

Who knows what they're saying about how big I've gotten/ will be.. I'm bigger than those two! Good thing I live far away so I won't have to hear it. :)

  • Seriously -- I think people just want to say something, anything to you b/c you're pregs, but then don't really know what to say. Then it just sometimes comes out sounding weird.

I agree that we wear much more figure conscious clothing than our moms did when they were pregnant back in the day. I saw preg pics of my mom and she was wearing all of these groovy '70s style mumuus. I, on the other hand, wear straight jeans and form fitting tops every single day. That and not to mention, lots of our moms had babies at a much younger age so they were naturally a lil bit thinner.

I say, be proud and amazed at everything your body is doing right now and just focus on that. In the meantime, everyone else can stick it!
