Aflac question

Does anybody have Aflac as extra insurance? I am  self employed and I will need to take a few months off after I have the baby.  I was wondering if Aflac would be beneficial to me during that time.

Re: Aflac question

  • we have Aflac as a supplemental.  My DH has it through his work.  Our understanding is it will pay some of our hospital costs as well as pay while I am out on maternity leave.  He has talked to the guy a couple of times about it and we always get told the same thing.  You have to be on it a year for it to count though (at least that is how it was with our employer) so you might want to check that before you invest in it.

  • Just depends on what coverages you purchase. I just have short term disability for myself which will pay me up to 6 weeks post partum 60% of my salary. I pay $7.42 a week for STD. My husband (who works at the same place I do) also carries STD for himself and then a family accident plan (for if any of us get into an accident non work related we will get so much per Dr visit, appointment, surgery, etc) There are other coverages you can purchase as well such as hospital (which will reimbruse you for some of your hospital stay- this would be a good one for you to purchse as well as STD). If you have any other questions you can PM me, I'm in charge of enrollment for our insurance at work so I've had to deal with AFLAC often.

  • I looked into it when we were ttc, but there is a waiting period of 9-10 months if you are wanting to use it for pregnancy, so it is probably to late to get something now. I didn't end up getting it, because if I would have gotten pregnant that cycle (which I did), it would not cover my pregnancy.

However, I was looking into a hospital indeminty (sp?) plan, which would have helped us with some of our out-of-pocket expenses, so maybe the short-term disability plan is different.

I say it's worth looking into!

  • I have Aflac for short term disability.  You have to have it for 10 months before you give birth to get the money for maternity leave.  Luckily though everything else is covered before that 10 months.  I am off work due to complications of pregnancy and that is covered even though I haven't had it for 10 months.  There are other things you can sign up for through Aflac.  You can get policies where you get money for each day you are admitted to the hospital and doctor's appointments and that type of thing.  I am not sure if you could be covered for that if you signed up now or since you are already pregnant if hospitalizations due to birth has a waiting period too.

  • I have the STD and hospital plan.  Like PP said, STD pays a % of your salary.  This depends on how much you buy.  The hospital plans pays something like $400 for every day you are admitted to the hospital.  This was great for me since I ended up being in the hospital for 5 days with my first.  There is a waiting period.  I believe mine was a year but it could have been 9 months.  I've had it since 2006 or 2007 so I don't really remember.
