Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone's LO's head circumference jump up?

DS has always been in the 50/60th percentile for head circumference.  Today, at his 9 month check up, it jumped to 90th.  The pedi feels strongly that everything is fine and that just a big boy and has a head to match.  She said she's going to keep an eye on it, but that he is easily meeting milestones which gives her no cause to be concerned.  When I asked her what the concern would be if there were one, she said Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) which of course freaked me out.

Reality is that I know he's fine- she said in most all cases, we would be noticing issues by now and that, generally, the fontanelle would be puffed up which it's not even close to being raised.  Just curious if anyone else has a LO who's jumped percentiles in head circumference?

On her way out the door, I asked if I should be watching the fontinelle.  Her response was- you can, by I assure you he doesn't have Hydrocephalus....but then she said if his head continues to get larger at the 1 year appt, they'll do an ultrasound.

  • I'm also realizing that my siggy pic is taken from an angle that makees his head appear large- it doesn't actually look out of proportion ;-)

My DS has a HUGE old noggin. It's in the 95th percentile. i don't think I'd be concerned. Isnt't your DS tall? I feel like tall and big head go together, at least with my DS.

Yeah he's 94th percentile for height.  I think the concern was raised because of the jump from 60th to 90th. But, she also mentioned that the previous measurement may have been a touch off which would affect it.

  • My DD's head went from the 75th percentile, to the 90th, then off the charts! Funny since the rest of her measurements are around the 25th percentile. lol We had to go back and have it measured once, but she is fine! big head = big brain!

  • Naomi's did.  They told us the exact same thing they told you.  I'm honestly not worried, I'm pretty sure she's fine.  She just has a big noodle :)

  • Yep, we went through the same thing at DD's 9 mo check up.  Her head circumference was previously at 45% and it jumped to 85%.  My pedi said she wasn't worried, and that her head is now more proportioned to the rest of her body. (She is in 95% for both height and weight and has been since birth.)  We are also just going to see where she is at at her 1 yr check and go from there.  I now find myself constantly scrutinizing her head and comparing it to other babies her age, though!
