Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Okay, how exactly do you "cosleep"?

I'm going to attempt to cosleep with our son tonight because I flat out can not sleep with him on the couch...I'm too afraid I'm going to drop him.  When you cosleep with a newborn, are you simply laying them in bed with you, or do you have to buy some sort of mattress extension?  I've read about it online and it seems to indicate that the baby sleeps in the middle of the bed, between the two parents...not sure how well that will work since my husband and I are so big.

Re: Okay, how exactly do you "cosleep"?

  • I put DD on my side of the bed, on the edge, since she doesn't roll over.  (When she starts rolling over, I'm going to have to figure something else out).  I snuggle up to her, and she actually wiggles herself closer to me, so she's not on the side, but more like in the middle of where I used to sleep.  I thought I would freak out, but I sleep soooo much better when she's right there with me.

  • I just cuddle him in the crook of my arm, between DH and myself. But we have a king-sized bed.
  • do some research on safe cosleeping. we use an arm's reach co-sleeper attached to my side of the bed. and then in the mornings she is in bed between us with just a sheet over her and no pillows anywhere near her. DH is a very heavy sleeper which is why i don't leave her in the bed all night. but when he's away, i can sleep with her and not worry.
  • I have an Arm's Reach Mini Co-Sleeper bassinet that attaches to our bed. It keeps him at bed level, but in his own safe place.  Whenever he is actually in bed with me for daytime naps and such...I will put him at a higher elevation than myself (i,e: blanket or a very large pillow) that way I can't roll onto him.

We have a king sized bed as well, but my husband loves to take it over ;)  Hehe.

I think I'm going to give this a shot tonight.  I need sleep at night!  I was able to sleep from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today since my husband is staying home the rest of the week.

  • before dd started rolling over, i would just sleep very close to dh and keep dd on the other side of me.

now that she's bigger and can roll, she's in the middle of dh and i but up above our heads without any pillows.

most of the time, i sleep topless so i can nurse her while we sleep. i tuck her under my arm (switching sides throughout the night) and she can nurse as she pleases .

  • When DS cosleeps with us, he just lays in between us. Sometimes I move him to the outside of the bed depending on which breast I'm feeding him on. Once he starts rolling that might be a little dangerous since the bed isn't up against the wall. DS and I usually both sleep on our sides up against one another. DH kinda scares me b/c he doesn't seem to have the instincts for watching out for him, but I keep the baby up against me or my arm around him for protection.
  • I do not co-sleep, bu the safer way to do it is to use a co-sleeper that you either place next to the bed (similar to a pack n play) or one that lays on your bed with you like this:

It is not safe to have the baby sleeping without these things, especially if you are sleep deprived.  You could roll onto the baby and suffocate him.

  • We snuggle with her resting her head on my arm, in between us. But she is more on my side of the bed & I'm usually hanging off the bed. She wiggles in closer to me whenever she is in the bed with me. We both seem to sleep better when she's in the bed with me.?
  • DS sleeps in between us.  One of us usually cuddles him for part of the night.  My DH is a big guy and usually a heavy sleeper but when he has DS in his arms and they are asleep he is a gentle giant.  We keep the pillows away from him and just let the sheet cover him.

  • There are several ways and all need their own safety precautions. Here is a good article to get you started:

  • He sleeps either in between us cuddled next to me or he sleeps on my left side and we cuddle so as he doesn't fall off the bed.
  • DD sleeps between us. Unfortunately, she is not a snuggler at night :( She sleeps with her arms stretched out to the sides!! And, she is also a wiggler and many times ends up side-ways. Luckily, we have a king-size bed.
  • He sleeps in between DH and I.

When he was a newborn, he slept in the crook of my arm.

  • We have an Arm's Reach Co-sleeper on the side of the bed as a barrier in case she rolls over. She sleeps on the edge of the bed by me. DH is a known arm thrower in the middle of the night, so she just sleeps by me. I usually lay on my left side, facing her, and she rolls onto her side and snuggles with me. I put a pre-fold CD under her head so I don't have to change the sheets every time she spits up or my milk sprays everywhere :o)?
