? about doc visits

I've read several people make comments  (on this board as well as the 3rd tri) about their doc measuring them at each apt and feeling the baby for size. My doc has NEVER done this. Is it a common thing to happen and my doc is just being an idiot or what? When I go, I pee in a cup, have my weight and blood presure taken, listen to LO's heart beat (all by a nurse), the doc comes in, asks if I've had any complications, and leaves. Am I missing out on things that need to be done at each apt?

edit: I know each doc is different and does things differently, but if 9 out of 10 of yall's docs are measuring you and feeling for baby, then maybe I need to find a new doc?

Re: ? about doc visits

  • Mine started measuring me at 22 weeks.  So he has only done it once, and will do so again at this weeks appointment.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

  • Mine has never done this either, and I've been wondering the same thing. I thought maybe I'm not far enough along yet.

  • I didn't start being measured until 20 weeks - Totally possible that you're either not showing enough for them to want to measure, or it's not time yet, according to them!
  • Mine doesn't measure either...

  • I was starting to think the same thing and surprisingly my doctor measured me for the first time at my last appointment a couple weeks ago.  I guess some just wait until you're farther along, almost in the 3rd tri?
  • At my last appointment at 23 weeks my dr pulled out the tape measure at the start of my exam but then put it back after checking me out.  I just guessed that I wasn't ready to be measured yet.  Since he had the tape measure I'm sure I'll be measured soon.

  • i was first measured at 24 weeks. i wouldn't really worry about it if i were you. i think it's just an approximate estimate anyway. honestly, you can measure yourself if you'd really like. the measurement is from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus. my doc told me it "should be" within 2 cm of how far along you are. (so like, this week for me= 27weeks, "should" measure anywhere from 25-29cms)

  • My MW measured me for the first time at my last appt (25 wks), but didn't feel around for the baby.

  • Mine measured for the first time at my 24 week.  My appointments go like this: pee in a cup, weight/blood pressure by nurse; doctor comes in, answers any questions (I always have some), then listens for the heartbeat.  The measuring she does just before the heartbeat now.  I would ask at your next appointment if that's something they do and why/why not.

  • My Dr did it for the first time at 25 weeks and she mentioned that she only did it then because I am still losing weight... She is a little concerned aboutthe size of the baby so she is doing all the little tests to monitor the baby.  Otherwise she would have waited until 30ish weeks.

If you're concerned, you can ask your office when they start doing it, many may not because it is just an estimator.  Or you can do it yourself, its really easy (google a how too)

  • My Dr didn't measure me until my 24-wk belly check appt & I assume they will be measuring me at each appt from now on.

  • I'll be 29w4d at my next apt; I think I'll ask when/if he will start. Until then, I'm gonna attempt to measure myself just for sh!ts and giggles.  Thanks for the info ladies, I was just curious.

  • My dr does it every time I come in for an appointment. Maybe you should ask your dr to do it?
  • Mine has measured me at every appointment since 20 weeks I think.

My typical appointment is pee on a stick to check for sugar/protein, weight and measure.

  • Mine started measuring when I was about 20 weeks and have done it every time since then.  Normally I pee in the cup, they check weight, take me into the room and take my blood pressure, then the doc will come in measure and listen to the heartbeat, then ask if I have any questions.

  • Mine just started measuring at my last appointment which was...last week I think and she said that she doesn't necessarily do it every time but maybe every other appointment unless I seem to not be growing as planned but I am. :) I don't think it's too critical. Just ask your doctor. It never hurts to ask.
  • Mine didn't start measuring until the week 25 appointment. She hasn't felt for position at all. She's always done the heartbeat on the doppler, not the nurse. The nurse does the blood pressure and weight though.

  • My doc is the same as yours... does the same exact things!!! And no, have not been measured.

Because I'm a big dork, I tried this (using one of DH's carpenter measuring tapes). And if my measurments are semi-correct, I'm measuring right on track.

  • Found this video; at 10:30 the doc shows how to measure and explains the measurements.

  • I have been having identical doc visits (pee, weight, bp, doppler, quick chat, goodbye!) as you. I assume that my doc doesn't start measuring till 3rd tri. Maybe this is the case with yours as well.
