Do you worry about a wrong gender guess?

*I know the correct term is 'sex,' but I couldn't figure out how to word it and not sound ludicrous. Sorry!

So, I haven't even gotten a guess yet, but my anatomy scan is @ 18 weeks, and I'm already hearing the stories of women told one thing only to have another show up in the delivery room! I know it's never absolutely 100% accurate, and I know that with a clear shot, you shouldn't have anything to worry about, but still! I'm starting to wonder if I should get an elective u/s later just to confirm pink or blue!

Ladies who know (or those who don't yet), do you worry if the doctor guessed wrong?? Even though the only gender-specific thing we'll have is clothing, I'd HATE to find out we have a closet full of clothes the 'wrong color!'

Re: Do you worry about a wrong gender guess?

  • I was, I had a few ultrasounds due to an uncooperative baby and then the growth ultrasound.  I also did a 3d ultrasound that we paid separately for.  I asked everytime just to be sure.  I figured they cant be wrong everytime :)

  • With DD I had my anatomy scan at 21wks 4days and the way she was positioned they were able to see her from the bottom and she was NOT shy.

This time I will be exactly 21 wks. I don't mind waiting because it will be more accurate. Hopefully this one will be as easy to see as DD was.

  • I've had the same worries! But we're still going to find out. Here you can't find out at the hospital - you have to pay for an elective to find out the gender.

  • I'm not too worried about it. But I will be getting the 4d elective scan at around 28 weeks just to see baby, I'll have them do a confirmation too!

  • They guessed girl at the nt scan and told us they were girls at my ultrasound last week (15 weeks). I know it is early and they could be wrong but I have an ultrasound every week bc of the twins so I figure we would know soon enough if they start developing penises. They check in 3D as well. I don't care, I just want healthy babies (obviously we all do) but I also have boy clothes from my DS just in case ;)

What happens if someone can't afford or doesn't want to pay for an elective u/s?  Will they not let them deliver at the hospital?

  • With DS the ultrasound tech asked if we wanted to know and my answer was, "yes, but only if you are sure"  I know that it can still end up being wrong, but I felt more comfortable as long as the tech felt very sure.  And she was right for the record ;)

I will do the same again this time.

  • Not at all. Me knowing its a girl is fun- but I wouldn't be upset if she turned out to be a he. I'd have some returning to do but I wouldn't be mad about it- a little surprised definitely.

  • No not worried because like with DD we are having the gender confirmed at 28 weeks with a 3D/4D ultrasound. You can't mistake the sex with 3D at 28 weeks. It's either a vagina or a penis. If you are worried I do recommend investing in one it is cool to see what baby actually looks like and it was so comforting knowing for sure that Ellie was in fact an Ellie not a Kale. I can't wait to do 3D this baby so is DF.
  • I'm not worried, but I'm also not fully convinced that this baby is a boy... despite the u/s tech's "98% certainty".  I am excited to see baby again at my regular anatomy scan in March to double check.  I'll be happy with whatever the result is, I just want to see if the penis is actually still there or not!  As long as I am convinced at that point, I probably won't pay for an additional ultrasound.
  • No, I don't.  Honestly, it doesn't even register on my worry scale.  If they're wrong about the sex, oh well.

  • it's rare that they make mistakes these days. it happens, but not often.

w/my son it was VERY obvious. i saw the pictures and either he was a boy or there was something drastically wrong! lol.

Red, you're in NS aren't you?

They can deliver at the hospital no problem, it's just that many hospitals in what looks like Atlantic Canada (not sure about the rest) have policies about telling mother's the sex from an ultrasound.  I guess there have been mistakes in the past (I know of one) where the mom was told girl and out came a boy!

In my province, Newfoundland and Labrador some hospitals on the island (Newfoundland) won't tell you, but the hospital where I live in Labrador will.  There is only one place to get an elective 3D/4D u/s done in this province and that's in the capital city so it's not accessible to a lot of people that live in rural parts of the province.

  • I am going to pay for a private ultrasound later on to confirm since my insurance will only cover one more ultrasound through my doctor.

  • I will likely get a 3D/4D ultrasound just to be sure.  My mom had 5 u/s with me and they told her I was a boy.  My cousin was told she was having a girl and she had a boy.

  • Hmm, maybe I'm one of the few that is not worried about this at all. Our nursery is gender-neutral and I'm not a big fan of all blue or all pink clothes, so I think we would be fine. It might cause a few headaches with personalized items, but as long as a healthy baby comes out I'll take those headaches! So, no, I don't plan on doing an elective ultrasound to confirm the guess.

  • I'm not worried about it since we're not getting a "guess" until our 19 w anatomy scan. I do, however, side-eye all the early guesses that people get at NT scans.

I think what she meant was that the radiology tech at the hospital is not allowed to inform you of the gender, not that you won't find out when you actually deliver the baby at the hospital.

I'm not too worried.  This is why I make sure to have at least one outfit for the opposite gender for the homecoming outfit and a few neutral ones on hand at home.  Mistakes happen, and really it isn't a huge deal if they're wrong.  Your boy won't be scarred for life if he has to sleep in pink bedding and a girl really won't care that she had to sleep in blue or wear a few football themed outfits before you could get to the store to buy some hair bows :)

  • it is not on my list of worries, for whatever reason. i intend to register for neutral products and gear so hopefully if there was an incident, the only thing to worry about would be clothes.

  • It's a little bit of a concern for me, but I will have many ultrasounds, so I'm sure at some point they would catch it if they were wrong! I do know someone that was told girl at 18 weeks, she went out and bought all kinds of pink things, painted the room pink, etc and then found out around 24 weeks she was actually a he! This was only 3 years ago that this happened!
