High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and fasting numbers..

I have been diet controlled but my fasting #'s remain a little on the hight side. I really am trying to not go on meds but basically was given another week to see "what I could do".  My AM #'s need to be between 60-90 and there are a few values that are 92, 93, 94.  I don't feel like that should be such a big deal but i'm not a doc and the last visit he gave me a prescription for glyburide that I am trying to avoid.

I am 33 weeks. What do you all do to help control fasting #'s?

Re: GD and fasting numbers..

  • I have heard that the fasting numbers are the most difficult to control. Mine were very good for the first couple days then they started going higher (I have only been testing about a week.) All my other numbers are good so I know how fustrating it can be! Last night I moved my bedtime snack back a half hour and I woke up a half hour early to test it was 91 (I need to be under 95 for fasting). For my snack I usually have some air popped popcorn and a piece of mozzarella string cheese or a sugar free jello chocolate pudding with some walnuts. I am hoping that I can keep it low but if not I have decided not to stress...as the pregnancy goes on the numbers get harder to control and if going on insulin helps with the health of LO I will of course do it (although I am really hoping I can make it the next 8 and a half weeks or so without it!)

    Good Luck! :)

  • The only thing I can suggest is taking a walk or exercising after dinner that may help a little.  Unfortunately, overnight is when your hormones make the most noise and cause the blood sugar to rise, so it is hard to keep low.

  • take the glyburide. It's a small dosage, it's not a big deal, it will improve your numbers and your doctor told you to do it.

  • Thanks guys I am going to try and move my snack back a bit and see if that helps

jenreally-  I do understand that the glyburide will help improve my numbers I was just wanting to hear suggestions from others (than my dr).  I ask questions when doctors suggest something. Thanks though.

  • My fasting numbers have gone up in the past week.  They are all in the 90's.  When I faxed my #'s yesterday she gave me 3 more mornings and then I have to go in to talk about medication. :(  Here are things that have been recommended for me to try (haven't worked for me though!).....add more protein to bedtime snack, eat snack later, eat a snack in the middle of the night (someone told me to try milk- did it last night and my fasting this morning was 104!) and lastly blueberries as the bedtime snack.  I am going to try that tonight.

  • I'm having the same issue w/ my fasting number.  Spoke to my OB about it today at my appointment, and she suggested that I try almonds as my bedtime snack.  Trying it tonight!
  • I don't have any suggestions for you. I couldn't control my fasting numbers at all from day one on the diet. Eating dinner earlier didn't help, no bedtime snack didn't help, bedtime snack didn't help. The only thing that did help was Insulin. They refuse to control GD with Glyburide at the hospital I'm being treated at, they will only control GD with Insulin. I've been on it since 21wks. I got used to it fairly quickly.

At least if you have to be medicated you are in the homestretch already!

  • Milk definately raises my # I have noticed. apparently it totally depends on your body cause last night i had a sugar free jello pudding and a few almonds as a snack and woke up with my highest fasting yet-97.

So tonight I start the glyburide. I wasn't completely against it just trying to avoid it and hoping that my "discipline" would do it.  No such luck. We can only do what we can do right?
