Hello Ladies
Have you ever heard of this skin condition (Pityriasis Rosea), especially with regard to pregnant women? My husband has been diagnosed with it and I haven't caught it yet, but I'm extremely anxious because some of the information online regarding pregnant women is very scary. Here's what one of the websites says:
"In pregnant women with Pityriasis Rosea miscarriage can also occur,
particularly if they develop the condition within the first 15 weeks of
their maternity. It may also result in premature delivery,
Hyporeactivity and Neonatal Hypotonia".
Apparently it's more prevalent in women, especially pregnant and the cause of this condition is unknown.
In general, the information about this condition online is conflicting, on the one hand, some websites say that it's harmless to pregnant women but some say that it may have severe consequences. My husband's doctor also said that it's harmless to pregnant women. She also said that it's not contagious, but there is conflicting information online regarding this issue as well. Some websites say that it's not contagious, while others say that members of the same household have been known to experience it at the same time and there have been outbreaks of this condition in fraternities.
Any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Re: Pityriasis Rosea
Thank you! Did anyone else in your household catch it from you when you had it?
I had this right before I got pregnant, actually while we were trying. Mine was fairly mild, only on my arms and tiny bit on back. The doctor told me to just put Cortaid cream on it, because the prescription could be harmful to a fetus. No one else around me got it, it didn't spread, and my husband even rubbed the cream on my back for me, so he directly touched it.
Good luck!
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
This Cluttered Life
Thank you for your answers!
I called my OB/GYN's office today and it seemed that the nurse wasn't too familiar with pityriasis rosea, since she asked for a few minutes to look it up online. After consulting with the doctor, she told me that it is unclear whether or not this condition is contagious and that in order to prevent it, I should make sure to wash my hands often and shouldn't touch my husband's lesions. She also told me to call their office if I start getting any of the symptoms that he had in the beginning. I think there is a certain risk to this condition while pregnant, otherwise she probably would've dismissed me without asking to call them if I was starting to develop it.
I'm not sure if there's anything that they will be able to do if I get it, but they probably will have me checked up more often and more thoroughly. I am certainly hoping not catch it and your posts about having it or one of the family members having it and not spreading it to others, definitely made me feel more assured. Thank you!
