Esther?

What are your thoughts on this name?  Old-timey name, pronounced "Ester."  I've always liked it, but would people still be familiar enough with it to know how to spell it/say it, with the silent H?

Re: Esther?

  • Yes  I don't see the name pronunciation being a big deal - most should know how to pronounce it I would think.

  • I totally think people will know how to say it-I wouldn't worry about that.

Personally I think the name is out dated and does sounds old...but then again, that's just my opinion!

  • It's not an awful name and I think people would be able to pronounce it.

However, whenever I hear it I can't get the image of Aunt Esther from Sanford and Son out of my head.

  • I love this name, but I'm a big fan of the "old lady" names. I don't think spelling or pronounciation would be a problem. I know of a little girl named Esther with the nn Essie, which I think is super cute.

  • Absolutely love it. That was a contender for us but Eleanor won. Esther isn't uncommon in my neck of the woods, Dutch country.

  • I loooooove Esther!  I wanted to use it for a second girl, but we're using Ruth as a middle name and that's too many r's in the middle.

  • My name is Esther , no one ever has a hard time to pronounce it and there are very very few ways to make fun of it. I very often hear" Oh, i love your name, my aunts/grandmothers.. name is Esther"

I love my name because i am always the only Esther, so i never get mixed up like Jennifer A or Jennifer B...

  • I can not imagine that anyone would have trouble pronouncing it, so no worries there!  With that being said, I do not like it at all, and I love "old lady" names.  I can not pin point why I don't like it, but I don't.

  • My friend's daughter is Esther and at first I thought it was really weird but then it grew on me and I think it is so cute! And she will never be part of the Olivia, Grace, Isabella, Emma crowd that has 5 other kids with the same name in her class.

  • Isn't that the name Madonna was calling herself when she was starting her Kabbalah craze? Random, but all I picture is Madonna when I hear it.

  • I love old lady names...but not Esther.  It just sounds way dated to me....about 50- 100 years dated.

But no one will have an issue with the pronunciation.

  • I don't like it but then again I'm not a fan of the old-timey names. I don't think people would have a problem pronouncing it correctly.
