Pregnant after 35

Anyone taking Prozac during early pregnancy?

Hi!  I've been MIA from the boards for a little while after a m/c in November.  I'm not pregnant again yet, but my husband and I are TTC.  I wanted to post in this forum to get input from women who are already pregnant.  Are any of you taking Prozac during your pregnancy?  I'm going through a very tough time trying to decide if I want to get back on meds prior to becoming pregnant.  The decision is really stressing me out.  I'm 37 and want to minimize as much risk to the fetus as possible since I'm already in a high risk age category.  I thought I could fight through and try w/out meds (I went off meds in November), but I just don't think I can live like this any longer!  My anxiety is through the roof and it's now starting to cause problems with my job, my marriage, my fitness....everything!  I guess I'm just looking for some positive input from folks who were on Prozac during pregnancy, and everything worked out fine.
I appreciate it!

Re: Anyone taking Prozac during early pregnancy?

  • I was not on Prozac, I was on Lexapro. I was not planning on getting pregnant, and I didn't find out I was pregnant until 7.5 weeks into the pregnancy.

I was taken off Lexapro, and my doctor said we could either see how I do without medication or try something more pregnancy safe. I opted to stay off the meds first, and I have been fine.. well as normal as you can be with pregnancy hormones making you emotional LOL

Prozac is rated as a C drug during pregnancy. Lexapro is a C but drops down to a D if taken late in pregnancy.

You should talk to your doctor and let him/her know you're trying to get pregnant so they can put you on something that will be more pregnancy compatible and you don't have to switch mid stream.

A good site to get pregnancy safety drug information is www.safefetus.com FYI.

Use the drug search and you can get drug ratings, then of course talk to your doctor about it.

  • Thanks Mcwhittaker.

Yes, I'm already working with my OB and a therapist about this.  It's just MY piece - the actual decision that's the most difficult and that I was looking for feedback on.

I will most likely start on a low does of Prozac for now.

    Thanks

  • I am.  I shared with the OB at the 1st appointment and he didn't even blink: said it was much more important that I keep taking it and that it is a drug that has been out a long time.

  • My cousin did as well, and also took it nursing.  I think it's not that big a deal.

  • Hi, I post at the TTC over 35 board but popped on over here and thought I would share my story. I am not yet pregnant either but over a year ago decided to go off Prozac in order to be chemical free for TTC, well that didn't go so well and after much internal struggle and feeling things out I decided it was best to go back on for myself and once I got better I really took a look at the data and saw there was no harm to the baby other than possibly having some non-lasting side effects, symptoms when born. Funny I actually forgot about that part. So although i hate putting a baby in potential harms way, there would be more harm not being on the meds as my stress can effect the baby: weight, development etc. The decision is yours and you will know what to do when it comes to you, you'll figure it out.
