Anyone doing elective U/S for gender determination?

My OBGYN's office gave me a flyer that states they offer 16 Week Gender Determination Ultrasounds.  The cost is $75.

The flyer says "This includes a 2D session with DVD at 16 weeks and concludes at the 20 week study.  Multiple Black and white photos provided."

Originally, I was going to wait until my 20 wk u/s to find out the sex, but now I'm curious.  20 weeks is still 6 weeks away, but I could get the elective u/s in 2 weeks when I go in for my 16 week appt.

What's throwing me off is the part that says "...concludes at the 20 week study."  I know even at the 20 wk u/s, it's not a guarantee that they'll be right, but does this part make it sound like they are not "guaranteeing" anything until 20 weeks?  If so, what sense does it make to have the elective u/s?

No, but it sounds like a money making scheme for your OB.  They already do this at the 20 week scan, but they want you to pay $75.00 out of pocket that (obviously) doesn't affect anything insurance wise.

Yep, I agree it is a money-making scheme.  They gave me a flyer AND it's on their website.  I think I'll just go with the plan of waiting until 20 weeks.

  • We opted for a 16wk elective U/S. I'll be 16w2d, but the past few U/S's the baby has measured at least 2 days ahead, so I'll be around 16 1/2 or so.

I trust it if the tech does. If they can't get a clear shot then thats a different story. We are bringing the grandparents (which we can't bring them all to our anatomy scan) so it'll be a special day :)  Also, with the package we chose, we get a DVD of the session, 20-30 photos on CD, and some printed photos. They also offer a sort of "skype" feature so the grandparents who live out of state can be a part of it too. Totally worth it to me. BTW it's $99. I can't wait!

  • We are doing elective ultrasound for gender determination at 16 weeks, but not with our OB.  It IS a money making thing, no matter who does it, since you will find out eventually one way or the other.  The real question is whether it is worth it to you to know early.  We are moving into a new house and have several other things going on so that extra month I will have to get prepared (assuming baby cooperates!) is worth the extra money to me.  Just a personal decision.

  • We opted to do it...I was 16 weeks on Friday and found a place (not the doc) who would do it that day! It was $75 for a15-20 min session but, it was 3D and we got a CD of all photos taken and 2 printed photos.  We really enjoyed the experience and are happy we could find out early...now we can start on the nursery and agree on some names!

We originally thought that the 3D wasn't worth it and a waste of money, but couldn't wait til week 20. And, after having it done at 16 weeks and enjoying the experience so much that we plan on going back at week 30.

    Good Luck! :o)

  • I am having an elective gender scan on Thursday (17 weeks) at an independant ultrasound place. DH and I are celebrating 3 years of marriage on March 1, and finding out the gender of our baby was something we think would be a perfect way to celebrate. Also, we haven't seen our lil' love bug yet so we are beyond excited.

This for me as well. We're getting one done at a little past 15 weeks at a place where my SIL and several of her friends have gone. They guarantee their guess, and if baby doesn't cooperate they will bring you back for free. It'll be about $100 with a DVD.

We've had all girls in our family recently so we will need to be shopping for a lot more stuff if it's a boy and we'd like to get a head start on that if need be. And I'm impatient Big Smile

  • We are having a gender scan done at 18 weeks becasue my OB is having a special on the 3d scans that weekend:) we are really excited because we are going to get to bring the grandparents with us and we all get to find out together.  It is an extra 80 $$ but the 3d is way better at seeing details than the 2d I don't think I would have the 2d scan done any earlier due to it's lack of detail compared to a 3d but we also get a cd with the pictures on it and we can get a dvd of the entire U/S if we want it for extra.  they said they can do it as early as 16 weeks but the U/S tech recommended waiting until really 23 weeks or later cause she said you'd get better pics of the face and stuff, for me though I just can't wait any longer to find out what I'm having:)

  • We are doing the elected gender determination scan at about 16w, but not with OB office, we are going this Friday morning.  I have posted this before, but we are doing this because my DH is in the military and he is leaving Friday evening for a couple months and will miss the anatomy scan.  This way he gets to see LO and we can hopefully find out the gender together.
  • We've opted for the 16 week gender scan @ my OB's office; it's also $75...we go in tomorrow afternoon. We are *super* excited!! Party!!!

We're mostly doing it because we're impatient (LOL), but also because A) we get to see LO an extra time between the 12 week U/S the 20 week anatomy scan, and B) because I wont get off BF's back to start registry shopping. LOL We agreed we wouldnt start the registry until after we knew the sex, so hopefully baby will cooperate - if so, I'm thinking the rest of our afternoon is gonna be *mighty* busy. *teehee!* Angel

  • We had a gender reveal ultrasound at a local place (not OB). I was 15 weeks and they said that if they couldn't tell what we were having, we could reschedule and come back for (no charge). We paid $59 for a 30 minute session, black and white pics, & a CD of about 15 additional pics. Well worth it!! I couldn't wait 5 more weeks to find out!
  • Ours is this coming Thurs (16 wks 2 days). It's also not through our OB.

One of our main reasons is just extra assurance that LO is doing well. We went through so many years of infertility it's hard to not worry with the pregnancy. (I can seriously leave my reg appt after hearing the hb and get worried on the way home that something is wrong lol).

Our insurance pays everything with no deductibles - so paying the $60 our private facility costs is no big deal to us b/c we aren't paying anything with OB.

And a plus is finding out the gender!! We will be using this facility for a our 28 week 3D u/s and it will only cost us $40 because we have been there before. The sessions include a 20 min DVD and i'm not sure how many pics.

In between the private u/s's our OB will do a routine one at the 20 week and 33 week marks (I had GD with my DD's pg so my OB does an extra u/s prior to birth to check how big the baby is.)
