Success after IF

what's a namesite that tracks popularity of a name over the years?

I'm just curious.  Quite a few names that were popular back when my grandmother was born seem to be making a comeback.    For example -Eleanor.   That was my grandmother's name,  a woman in my dad's office has that name (She's in her 70's).    Was it popular in the 1920's, 30's, then died down and now rising again in the 2010's?

And why is Eleanor (considered an older name) rising in popularity but another "older" name like Edith or Mildred isn't?

Yeah I'm a little bored so I have time to think about these things.

  • WHat is old is new again. The "older name" trend has been popular for the past few years. You can track the popularity of a name here: https://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#

I think partly the reason for the spike in Eleanor is the use of the nickname Elle or Ella as well. People seem to like both those names, but also like names with a more formal name.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • https://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#  this site is really cool.

I love seeing the trends with names.

For instance, a favorite name of mine, Grover, was popular until the early 70's when Sesame Street started.... it just DROPPED of the charts - kind of funny to see how that works.  I love the name but would never use it for one of my kids b/c of Sesame Street, too...

Eleanor is DD's name :) And yeah, it was crazy popular in the 1910's-1920's, then went down through the 80's and has been climbing since. We personally like "older" names (we're considering Beatrice if this baby is a girl, and loved "Midge", nn for Margaret, too), so I can't tell you why some come back and some don't. I'd imagine it has to do with phonetics and certain larger trends. Check the blog on babynamewizard.com, she talks about that sort of stuff. I think there may be a post toward the end of 2010/beginning of 2011 about the year's trends.

This is us as well. We call DD "Ellie" like 95% of the time. We like nicknames :)

  • Ahhh... I'm a Beatrice, named after my Gram. (my middle name is just Bea) It's a very nostalgic name for many.

I love the name Grover, too. lol. Davez says HELLNO!

Yeah, I loooooooove the nn Bea, especially with our last name. DH is liking Olivia/Liv this time around. We'll see. I probably could actually get him to do Grover, but it's not on my shortlist.

  • There's a theory of a 100-year rule with names. YOur grandparents names are generally the ones that are seen as ripe for revival.

Obviously, we like old-lady-chic names. We also seriously considered Viola, Beatrice, Margaret and Katharina (just as a spin on Katherine.)

We looked at the SSA website and the BabyNameWizard site.

I just read this (well, GL's post) to Dh, because Grover is totally nms and DH says, hmmm-- I think I like the name Grover....Maybe I should run a few of my names past your DH and vice versa and we'll work out a trade for our next ones.
