Success after IF

DH didn't realize how popular (according to the SSA website) the name Ava is.

We were at Babies R Us and I saw a bunch of sippy cups with names on them.  Nicholas has one and I was curious to see if they had the name Ava.  They did, so I bought one for her to use when the time comes.

In the car DH says "Wow I'm surprised you actually found her name".   I said "Really? I'm not.  Ava is a pretty popular name. It's number 4 on the SS website.".

He had never heard the name before (except for Ava Gardner).   Meanwhile I've seen it used many many times.   Granted I've never personally met anyone that have named their daughters Ava, but I have heard it plenty of times.  Mostly on this board or other bump boards.

So those of you with Avas (Davez, JillRock)  have you met another Ava in real life?

  • I know of one Ava and I think she is about six years old - my friend's daughter.   I love the name, and I'm considering it for this little one if we find out we are having a girl... (Ava Margaret)...but I wouldn't tell DH right away - I want to give him a list of names I sorta like, then make this in my second round.... (plotting....) :)

  • Not Ava, but we've met two other little Megan/Meghans since we have been in NC.  In 18 months, we did not meet another one back in MN.  I was surprised because Megan is one of those old names that you don't see too high on the SS list.  It was 105th in 2009.

  • I've met several Ava-s IRL but all are under 5.  None older than that.

  • I love the name Ava!  We know 4 little girls named Ava and one is my cousins daughter so it was never on our girl name list.

  • I personally spend more time looking at the popularity lists by state on that site. I usually check VA and DC...I think it's more accurate than looking at the country as a whole (it's kind of a big place, lol). Plus, popularity now doesn't mean as much as it used to because there are so many MORE names.

  • There's an Ava  in DD's daycare class, and I think I met a baby named Ava the other day too.

I find this hilarious: we have friends who pride themselves on usign unusual names. Her family always uses unusual names. Their daughter is going to be named... Sophia. They had no clue how popular is was when they chose it. I am... confused. Wouldn't you check that if you pride yourself on uncommon names?

  • We meet Ava's *everywhere* we go -- seriously.  At a birthday party last summer?  Two other Ava's.  Every time we go to the Children's Museum, there is at least one other Ava.  And at least once a month or so we'll be at Target/Grocery Store/Doctor's Office and I'll hear a mom call out Ava.  I had no clue how popular it was until we had already decided on the name.  It wouldn't have changed our minds (she's such an Ava), but we were kind of surprised.  DH and I have talked about how we'll feel kind of bad when she's in school and she has to be called Ava R. to distinguish her from the other Ava's in her class.  ;)

  • I went to school with an Ava, so the only one I've ever met is 35 or 36! It was a very unusual name then.
