Any petite girls having problems with pants?

I'm 5'3" and normally wear a size 2 (my sister calls me fun-sized).  Well, my bump is making it hard to button my pants so I thought that I'd start trying on some maternity pants this weekend.  It went less than well!  Most of the pants come in Small, Medium, Large, and the smalls are ridiculously huge!  I managed to find some size 2's, but they were full panel and the crotch seemed very.... Fluffy.

Being in the middle of South Dakota, my options are very limited as to where I can shop in town (most stores have maybe 2 racks of maternity clothes).  I want to maybe order some pants online, but after yesterday I'm a little gun shy.   Where are other petite girls having luck?  Is there a specific type that seems to work better that maybe doesn't have so much extra material in the crotch?

Thanks ladies!

  • I'm sorry you're having that problem. I have as well. I have a very small bone structure, so I wear very small sizes, but my legs are long so most of the time the leg length and the waist size don't work right. I had a very hard time shopping for maternity pants, because even the smalls were too big (but almost too short...sigh...). Good luck finding something!

  • I'm not petite but am having trouble finding pants long enough. I just discovered that Gap has actual # sizing on their maternity jeans and they come in 3 different lengths, so you might want to try there. I will be going this week and hope they work out. They are a little pricier, but if they are the only ones that fit it's worth it. Good luck!

  • I'm pretty much the same size as you and I tried on several jeans at A Pea in a Pod that fit. Their private brand jeans come in Petite sizes but they also have XS in their regular sizing. I thought the XS fit better in length than the petite.

I also tried on some of the designer jeans (citizens, J brand) at the same store. They are very, very expensive but they fit very nicely (I was hoping they wouldn't fit well so I wouldn't feel bad about not buying them). You just have to hem them because they are really long.

And, I agree with pp above. I buy my regular jeans at the Gap in "ankle/short" and the length is usually perfect. I think their maternity jeans come in the same sizing as their regular jeans do.

    Good luck!

  • I'm 5'0" and usually wear a 0-2.  I had a terrible time with DD.  But, like PP said, Gap pants worked best.  I actually just ordered a few dress pants for work in 0 ankle with the front panel, and they're still long enough to wear with heels.

I think jeans are going to be tougher this time. Seems like most of the jeans Gap has are skinny jeans, jeggings, or they don't come in ankle length.  Something about getting super big makes me not want to wear jeggings. I have boot cut jeans from last time that should work, but they're still a little big.

  • I'm far from petite or as little as you, but I have the opposite problem.  My solution is to convert some of my pre-pregnancy pants into maternity pants.  Have you considered going that route or using a tailor to tailor your current pants (or new ones that you know will fit the rest of you) so you can be comfortable?

  • Motherhood maternity offers petite sizes and gap offers short regular and long their maternity sizes are also like regular pants sizes 0 through like 16. I'm only 5'3 1/2 to 5'4 and I have had the most luck with those two stores. I have also found the ones that look like actual jeans or the demi panel to fit the best the rest I get saggy crotch and loose butt sydrome.
  • Have you tried a bella band with your regular pants? Or, taking some regular pants to a tailor as pp suggested is a good idea!

I am 5'2 but the medium pants seem to fit me just fine, only thing is I have to mentally add $12 to the cost of anything since they need to be hemmed. Luckily, won't have that problem come the spring and summer!

  • I understand what you mean, I have had to buy everything online because there are only 3 stores in my area that carry a very small, and ugly, selection of maternity clothes (and I don't live in a very small town).  Old Navy also has petites that seem to fit pretty good.  I just bought a pair of Jeans that were a size 1 but regular. They are super long but I am just going to have them altered cause they actually fit really well.  I bought another brand from some second hand store that was a "small" they are huge, 8 maybe a 6, not a small at all, luckily they were only $6.

Also like a pp suggested get a belly band, you will be able to continue wearing your regular pants unbuttoned for a while.

  • Thanks Ladies!  My problem isn't so much with the length as it is with the loose crotch  I did try on a pair of jeans at Target that seemed to not have that problem, but I didn't get them because they fit about the same as my regular jeans with my belly band.

Unfortunately, I have to wear Khaki's every day for work and my current khakis are getting a little run down, so I was really hoping to replace them with some comfy maternity ones and that's where saggy crotch issues came in.  They fit fine in the leg and the belly, but I just couldn't make the crotch look right.  Do the different waists have different fits in that area?  I usually wear Old Navy pants (2R), and I'd love to try what they have, but I'm hesitant to order any because I'd hate to tack on the shipping charges here and back and it's a 3 hour drive to return them...

  • I have the same issue-pregnant or not. I went to motherhood maternity and the xs were to baggy in the bum and thighs. What I did invest in was new lululemons. For me these yoga pants are a guaranteed fit and will stretch with you. I also bought a pair of second hand A pocket sevens for all mankind maternity denim on ebay. They fit lovely right now  and I have a pair of nice jeans to go out in. For work I wear leggings and tunic tops.

    Good luck!

I am 5'3" and a size 2.  I bought jeans and pants in a size 2 from the Gap but they are still too big.  However, they did fit me when I was in late 2nd tri/3rd tri w/my DD so I figure they will eventually fit again.  I did buy a size 2 and 4 cargo skinny jeans from Old Navy.  The size 2 fits now but I figure I'll get more use out of the size 4 so I am returning the 2.  The difference is though that they are skinny jeans so they are meant to fit tighter which seems to be helping me out. I order everything online.  I prefer to try on the clothes in my own home without the bad lighting :)
