"akierman, that has me even more confused because I am under the impression that introducing solids in the first year is only to supplement nutrition and to get babies used to new textures and flavors, not to replace what they are getting through BM or formula. I really think a lot of pediatricians are misguided! My friend whose baby five months and is 23 lbs (not fat, mom is 6'3") was told by her pediatrician to start solids even though he had not gained ANY weight since his 4 month appt. This seems crazy to me and I really have to question her reasoning for suggesting it."
I missed the repsonse and figured I'd start a new post because it would get buried in the OP.
I'm sorry for the confusion. I didn't word my reply very well. What I meant to say is that our pedi recommended solids at 4 mo for Thomas not to supplement his weight, but because he is consuming so much formula throughout the day and is probably ready for the new textures and flavors.
Thomas is definitely NOT underweight. I'm guessing he'll be close to 20lbs by his 4 mo appt in November.
It really depends on the baby and the pedi. If your pedi's advise doesn't sit right with you, then trust your gut. If they're recommending solids earlier than the 6 mo, you're perfectly free to ignore that and wait until 6 mo.
HTH.
