Babies: 9 - 12 Months

10 month old doesn't clap hands

My 10 month old doesn't clap hands yet. He does bang objects together though.  I mentioned it to pediatrician but he said not to worry but I'm still worrying! Anyone else have a 10 month old that doesn't clap hands?

  • Why are you worried? Dylan is 10 months and doesn't and he's perfectly fine.

  • I'm a worrier by nature :)  I feel like I remember by younger son clapping by now and when I look it up on the internet it says most kids are clapping by now. I just get worried about autism.
  • Next time your pedi says not to worry, don't!

Perfectly normal - he'll clap when he decides there's something worth clapping for! :)

  • DS is also not clapping, and not really a milestone I am watching for. You are going to worry yourself into a tizzy. Not clapping has NOTHING to do with Autism.

  • DD doesn'treally either. She'll kind of wave them up and down but doesn't really clap. No worries!

  • Liam doesn't clap his hands, really.  He tries sometime but he just bangs his fists together and even that is rare.  He's just no interested right now.  He's working on other stuff.

  • Put Ds on your lap and play patty cake a few times a day (or a few 1,000!)  Eventually he'll get it.

Worrying will not do much. Feeding him right (fruit veggie legumes and meat) and letting him be a kid is what you should be worrying about IMO.

Don't be worried. Know what causes autism and go from there.

  • I was also worried about a week ago.  I asked all the other moms in my Moms Group if their LO were clapping hands and they all were.  The very next day, DS started.  The same thing happened with waving.  Just when I was getting myself worked up, he started waving.
