Infertility

Room for one more?

Just got back from my OB/GYN. We've been trying since last summer with no success. She's put me on Clomid for now.

It's so surreal, I'm numb right now.

Mini Intro - I'm V. Been married for 2.5 years together for close to 9. I have 2 fur babies. 2 step children. SS lives with us full time.

Anything else, please feel free to ask.

  • Welcome!  Sorry you have to be here though.

Do you have a diagnosis or just unexplained infertility?  Have you had testing done (bloodwork, HSG, SHG, etc)?

    Good luck!!!

Are you being monitored while on Clomid (b/w and u/s, baseline, checks for ovuation, ect.)?

Yes, we are being monitored while on Clomid. I have to call in as soon as I get a + OPK and go in for progesterone monitoring.

Sorry, I'm fairly new to IF so I'm not sure what all the acronyms mean

We are just starting our journey. Last summer when I went in to see my dr. she drew blood and said I was good to go. So I'm assuming she's tested my blood levels.

    b/w= blood work

    u/s= ultrasound

Both are important while on clomid to ensure you don't overstimulate your ovaries which could be really bad news on the way to your BFP.

  • Without more testing I would not start clomid.

Has your DH had a SA? If the issue you're having is MFI then clomid does nothing.

If you haven't had an HSG you have no idea if your tubes are clear. If they are blocked the egg can't get through, again clomid does nothing.

Have you charted to make sure you are o-ing at all?

All of this.  Ob/gyne's are notorious for not doing a thorough IF eval before giving out Clomid.  Even though your DH has children doesn't mean that he doesn't have any issues now that would drive treatment.  GL!

  • I agree that you should NOT start a drug without having full testing, and that means CD3 blood, CD21 blood, HSG to make sure your tubes are clear and your husband needs an SA. Clomid is not candy, and all the Clomid in the world isn't going to help if your tubes are blocked or there is no sperm.

On top of that, RUN, don't walk, away from an OB that would prescribe Clomid without testing. Get yourself to an RE ASAP. OB's are not the experts. Also, are you over 35? Because "since last summer" could only be 6 months, and I know plenty of people who were able to conceive between 6 and 14 months with no issues, it just took them longer. Have you been charting or using OPK's? Are you ovulating? Are your cycles regular?

  • Never mind, I just saw your ticker. You're not even 30 yet, so unless you have other issues I don't know about (irregular cycles, endo, etc.) I would throw away the script for Clomid, start charting or using OPK's, and then if it happens after 12 months, get an RE referral.
  • Thanks for the welcome, ladies.

And I really appreciate all your concern. However, my Dr. has been seeing me since I was 19 and knows my gyno health best. I am choosing to follow her professional medical advice. She has done u/s's in the past on me and I trust her to guide me through this difficult process.

    this is not proper monitoring.

you should be having u/s and b/w on CD3 before starting clomid each cycle, and follow of b/w and u/s's around CD10-12 to see how you responded, and then every few days if your follies are not yet mature.

and I agree.   HSG and SA are musts before beginning ANY fertility drug.

I would be proud to be the biggest biitch here, but regardless of how I say it, I gave you good advice. OB's don't fully understand infertility, even if they say they specialize in infertility. Would you go to your primary care physician if you thought you needed ACL surgery? Reproductive Endocrinologists are specialists in infertility, and drugs are SERIOUS business. You do know that Kate+8 is a Clomid case, right? Again, good luck. You're gonna need it.

That's where I think you might be wrong.

Is there a reason the dr. went to Clomid with no testing or monitoring after ttc for only 5 months?

If not, then no- we don't share anything in common.
