Getting Rid Of A Paci?

Our pedi suggested at Ella's 6 month appointment, that we should get rid of her paci because she now has teeth. We felt like she still needed it, so she still has it. I know this is only her recommendation, but I wonder when I should get rid of it. When do you plan to do so?

Re: Getting Rid Of A Paci?

  • We are going to start March 1st (LO turns 1 on the 18th). I bookmarked a page at home about how to go about doing it, maybe someone else can link you to it since I'm at work?

It had you poke holes in the nipple part first, then increase the hole amounts, then move to cutting off the tip until it was down to a nub.

Sounded like a good method, since I'm afraid of going cold turkey.

  • Unless my ped says something or a golden opportunity presents itself, not until 18m or so. We only use it at bedtime or naptime, he doesn't get it at all during the day.

  • No EFFIN way am I doing it any time soon! My pedi said the same thing at 6 months.  I nodded and smiled.

My friends Dad is a dentist and he said it doesn't really effect their mouth until they're 3.  That being said, I definitely plan to get rid of it before then.  I have limited it only to nap time and sleep time for now.  They don't get it during the day when they're playing unless they're teething and REALLy need something so I don't go insane.

In the last 3 weeks, B has become more disinterested with it. A would have it constantly if I let her.  If they get rid of it on their own (some kids do), great.  If not, I'll start looking to get rid of it at 18 months or something.

Would you mind emailing me the page at bulldoglover78@yahoo.com? With DD#1 who is 12, we went cold turkey. She was older, but we were driving down the street and I told her to waive good bye to her paci and I threw it out the window. She waived good bye and never asked for it again. It worked for her. Things have changed so much since I had DD#1 12 years ago, that I am not sure what to do.
  • This scares me almost as much as potty training. He get's it at nap and bedtime, sometimes if he is cranky in the car. I have no idea how he would go to sleep with out that thing. I guess if there is no research showing it is hurting him at this moment I am ok with him having it for time being.

  • I've heard of methods like OnIslandTime metioned.  We actually just got rid of it, pretty easily.  First we cut out the day time paci and he only had it for nap and night time sleeping.  Then I noticed he wasn't looking for it until we were ready to give it to him so I cut it out all the way.  I realize he might have been the exception because it was so easy.  Hopefully one of those methods helps.

  • We got rid of it a little before 6 months and it was super easy.  Google Pantley's Gentle Removal Technique.  That's what we did.  It took 2 nights.

It's also in the No Cry Sleep Solution as well, if you happen to have that book.

  • As with anything else, the younger they are, the easier it will be!  I cut out DD's all day binky usage at about 6/7mths.  I did cold turkey no pacifier at 9 mths.  I made sure I had a lot of comforting toys in her crib (glow worm, Violet leap frog dog & a mobile).  It actually went surprisingly well!  First nap she only slept 20 min. (usually 2 hrs) but woke up in a good mood so it didn't bother me.  She went to sleep absolutely fine for her afternoon nap and slept 2 hrs.  Nighttime was definitely different.  Of course when this is their comfort, you have to realize they will be depending on you a lot more for comfort from now on.  But the next day, she was absolutely fine without it, and has been since!  I even experimentally tried to give it back to her a couple weeks later, and she didn't want it!  So I truly believe you will know what time is best for your LO.  I've also heard of trying to replace it with a teething ring of some sort, and I have a razzleberry teething pacifier she chews on once in awhile. GL!
