Birth weight of parents

Ok, so maybe this is a really stupid question...but does anyone have any idea if either you or your husband's weight at birth could correlate to how much our babies may weigh when they are born?

I was 7 lbs 11 oz at birth, which I consider normal...but my husband on the other hand was almost 10 lbs. I guess there is a long line of big babies in his family (sister, dad, aunt...).

Re: Birth weight of parents

  • Interesting question... and one I have been asked a lot by friends who know we're expecting.

I guess we can do an unscientific poll come August, right??

I was 4 lbs 11 ozs (4 weeks early) and my DH was 6 lbs 6 ozs.  His sister was 6 lbs 2 ozs.  Hmmm....

  • I was 9 lbs 14 oz and exH was 8 something 2 weeks early. DD was 7 pounds even.

DH was over 10 pounds, so I'm a little nervous this time because I doubt I can get a 10 pounder through my hips! I struggled enough with DD at 7!

  • I think size of the mother matters more.  DH was only about 5 pounds, 4 oz, BUT his mom is 4'11".  I was 8 lbs, 6 oz, but my mom is 6'.  More room for baby to grow often equals a bigger baby.  Since I'm tall too, I suspect we'll have a bigger baby.  Plus, the baby is already growing a week ahead as it is (a week ahead at the 14 week u/s), so this will likely be a bigger baby.

  • I worry about this.  I was only 8 lbs 2 oz but DH was 10lbs!

  • Oh God, I hope not. I was 10lb14oz. But they also let my poor [5'2" 130lb pre-pregnancy] mother go to almost 44wks before finally bringing her in for a C-section.

I've read that it has more to do with mother's weight - like if you're considered obese or have untreated GD, your chances for a big baby are greater.

ETA: My younger sister came right on schedule at 6lb-something-oz. For whatever that's worth. :)

  • That's what people keep telling me, but they focus on my husband's size rather than mine.  I was 7 lbs 11 oz 21 inches at birth.  Now I'm 5'2", 125 lbs (pre-pregnancy).  My husband was 9 lbs 6 oz 22 inches at birth and is 6'6" and 270.  His sister was also a big baby (10 lbs 11 oz).  DS ended up being 8 lbs 1 oz 22 inches when was born at 40w3d.  Guess we'll see what happens with this one!
  • I really don't think there is. Both my fiance and I were huge babies, but DD was 7lb11oz, which I consider to be pretty normal. She was born at 39 weeks.

  • My husband was nearly 10lbs and I was 8lb 7oz (2 weeks early).  Our son was 2 weeks early and was 7lb 4oz... not a small baby, for his early arrival, but definitely smaller than both of us!
  • I think I was around 8.2 and XH was around 8.10?  DD #1 was 8.7, DS was 8.11 and DD #2 was 7.8. I'm not 100% sure on MH's weight... I think his mom said something over 8. We need to have some kind of poll going on in August :)

  • I was 8lbs 4oz, and DH was a little less than 6lbs according to his mother (but she also says he was 2 weeks late....doesn't add up to me!)  G was 6lb 10oz and was born exactly 2 weeks early.
  • I think you also have to consider modern medicine.  20-30 years ago, they used different criteria to decide if you were ready to deliver.  So the size might vary from how it was when we were born.

Anyway, DH was 11+ lbs, so I really hope the baby gets some of my genes!

  • I've heard it follows the mother....which it did in my case with DD.  i was 7lbs and 19 inches long and DD was 7lbs 7oz and 20 inches long.   My DH was 4 weeks EARLY and was over 10lbs and 23 inches long and is now 6'6'' and 250 lbs.

  • I have no input, but I would love to know!

My aunt delivered her son 4 weeks early and he was 10 lbs 2 ounces. True story and kind-of scary!

  • So I'm really hoping the birth weight of this LO will be closer to me instead of mh!

Me: 6lbs 4 oz born 2 weeks early

MH: 10lbs 12 oz born 2 weeks late....

oh help me if this baby is close to 11 lbs...

  • Both of us were in the low 7's.  My dd was 9lbs 9 ounces.  DS was 1.5 weeks early and 8lbs 6 ounces.
  • I'm lovin' all this input! I really hope it doesn't correlate because if it does I think I'm screwed!

I'd love to believe that it depends on the size of the mother, but DH's mom is only a little over 5 foot, and probably 100 pounds pre-pregnancy. And he still ended up being 10 freakin pounds! hah!

  • the size of the mother is more what plays a part. God/nature try to be kind and not give you a child that you physically can NOT pass through a very, very tiny hole. I was 7lbs 6 oz (3 wks overdue) and DS was born on his due date and weighed 7lbs 2 oz. H weighed over 9 lbs.

  • H weighed about 5 lbs at birth and I was about 6, I'd have to look to get specifics.

With DD #1 I gained 48lbs Embarrassedand she was 8lbs and 5oz and was born 1 day before her due date.  With DD #2 I gained 24lbs and she was 8lbs and 10 oz and was born 6 days early.

Does it mean anything, I don't know.  But i hope it helps you feel better either way.

  • I was 8lb 8 1/2oz, DH was 8lbs *something* and DD was 8lb 9oz.
she pretty much the exact weight/length as I was.

  • I was 5 lbs 14oz, my husband was 7lbs 6 oz, my daughter was 6lbs 8oz, so almost exactly the average of our weights!

  • I was 6.9 and a week late, and DH was 9.0 a week early. I wonder how our baby will be!

  • I have no idea, but I thought it was crazy how you were 7lbs 11 oz at birth (which I was too) and your husband was 10 lbs. as was my husband!

    Crazy!

However, my husband was a month late and I was 3 weeks early.  So... if he would have been born on time he probably wouldn't have been 10 pounds and if I would have waited til my due date I would have probably weighed more.

the large size could've been caused by a few different factors--overeating, GD, etc.

  • I was 7 lbs 9 oz and DH was 7 lbs 8oz.  Both of our mom's were taller than me.  I'm 5'2" and DH is 5'3" so it can't be much bigger than that, right?  I'm guessing in the high 6 to mid 7 lb range for me, but we'll see.  Baby is currently small (about 3 days behind LMP or 2 days behind O date).

I think for some of the really big babies, it isn't necessarily a good indicator because I think were was a lot of undiagnosed GD back in the day and they were more apt to let you go past your due date.

  • I was 5lbs, 12 oz

    DH was 6lbs, 7oz

    DD was 5lbs, 6oz (2 wks early)

I think it def. plays a role.

  • I was 8 lb 6 oz. My mom is 5'5" tall. She was 4 lb. 6 oz. at birth and her mom is only 5'1" tall.

DH was a little over 6 pounds. His mom is only 5'1" tall.

Our daughter was 9 lb. 2 oz. I am about 5'8" tall.

Based on that and watching other family members, I personally think a lot of it depends on the mother.

  • I was 9 lbs 11 oz... and every baby in my family has been very long and over 9 lbs. DH, on the other hand was 7 lbs and change.

We expected a big baby... but DD came a week early and was 7lbs 14 oz. Pretty average. She was 22 inches long but super skinny.

  • I think there are a lot of other factors that go into it.  I was 6lbs 14 oz, and dh was about 5 and half lbs.  My kids so far have been 9lbs even, 10lbs 1oz, and 9lbs 2oz.

MIL had bad morning sickness and was worried about her job so she hid her pg for over 7 months.  My mom had 3 c-sections, each about 2 weeks early.  Her biggest baby was 7lbs 8oz.

As a side note, I have a friend who has 3 kids who were all 7lbs 5oz at birth.  One was a week late; one born on the due date; and one about a week early.  Her doc said it was like her body decided "that's it" once her babies reached that size.
