Hey ladies, I haven't posted over here yet because DS isn't quite 6 months. But I figure he's close enough. Now that i've introduced solids just wondering how other moms did it. What foods did you introduce first? By the time LO was 6 months old what foods did he/she try and what order did you give them? Also what did a normal day of eating look like at 6 months for your LO?
Re: what does/did your 6 month old eat?
We have to follow a low-protein diet for DS, so what we offered him to start is a little different from what other babies are getting, but here's how we do... We started with just applesauce, but by now he also enjoys pears, peaches, bananas, and carrots.
He gets breastmilk just about every 3 hours between 6am and 7pm, and then once or twice during the night. Daycare offers food in the morning around 8:30 or 9 and then in the early afternoon between 12:30 and 2. We do bedtime pretty much as soon as DS gets home, so we haven't found a way to get a 3rd "meal" into his day.
We try to offer his solids in between his normal breastmilk feedings. HWe have to measure everything he eats because of his protein issues, so we know that he started out eating only a half-ounce of solids at a time, but is now closer to 2 ounces at a time.
My LO nurses or takes a bottle about every 3 hours (he eats on demand still). We have worked in a mid-day meal of fruit or veggies and then a dinner-time meal as well. Both times, we do solids about one hour after nursing/bottle.
We started with avocado and have tried bananas, sweet potatoes, rice cereal, and yogurt (or any combination of those). We are working towards trying peas, applesauce, and carrots soon.
I eyeball the amounts, but he eats a couple of ounces each time.
Love, luck, and prayers to my BFPB Dr. SnowflakeBride
His first food was technically oatmeal, but his first fruit or veggie was apples. We try to stick to this schedule as much as possible, but it doesn't always work out:
6 am - 4 oz breast milk, oatmeal and fruit
9 am - 4 - 4.5 oz breast milk
12 pm - 4 oz breast milk, veggie and/or fruit
3 pm - 4 - 4.5 oz breast milk
6 pm - 4 oz breast milk, veggie and/or fruit (about to start meat as well)
8 pm - 4 - 4.5 oz breast milk, bed
So far, he has had oatmeal, apples, sweet potatoes, avocado, carrots, and peas (in that order). He's got bananas, mango, green beans, chicken, butternut squash, and zucchini waiting on him in our freezer!
We stick to a pretty tight schedule here
8 am- 6 oz bottle
9:30- oatmeal with fruit
1030 - 6 oz bottle and nap
1:30 - cereal and veggie (or fruit if LO didnt finish at breakfast)
3:30- 6 oz bottle and nap
5:30-6 cereal and veggie (full jar)
8pm- 6 oz bottle and nap
She has now tried almost every stage 2 veggie and fruit (but she started eating 3 meals of solids at 4.5 months) and she also enjoys the puffs (any flavor), yogurt bites, veggie sticks and cookies by gerber graduates. She only gets these treats if she has eaten everything and seems not full or if we are out and she gets a little hungry.
