d@mn biting (tips wanted)

Baby H is a biter... He bites me all the time but I think he just bit his last bite on my nip. He drew blood I have a nice gash at the bottom and a big long slice on the end :/ Now when I nurse on that side it's on FIRE!!! :(

He doesn't just chomp down either he chomps and pulls to unlatch. (only on my right side oddly enough) Once he does he's done nursing for that session but I need a preventative measure my boobs HURT!!!

  • I couldn't get mine to stop. My supply was going down, it made her mad and she'd take it out on the boobies. I finally just weaned her :(
  • Every time DD bit me, I took her off the boob and said "no biting. Ouch" and she would get really p!ssed and I just kept doing that till she realized biting = boobs taken away.

Edit: Oh preventative..... Hmmm.... Low supply on that side is all I can think of.

  •  That hurts, Logan does it all the time.

One time he bit my nip while I was sleeping, I sat straight up and yelped. He rolled over and went back to sleep.

When he does it during the day, I pull him off and put him down, and say NO biting. I can sometimes tell when he is going to do it because he starts to purse his lips, so I pull him off and say don't you bite me. He usually laughs after i say it though, so I don't know how much help I am.

    Effing crazy people.

I've always had supply problems. My milk didn't come in until 2 1/2 weeks after she was born, and then it took me about a month to work up to the point that I could ebf. When my supply started plummeting again, as emotionally difficult as is was to wean, I just couldn't stand the thought of trying to build everything up again while dealing with the biting O_o

I don't know how often you nurse him, but you might try cutting out one feeding and see if that helps. That worked for me for about a week... then she started up again.

     Clearly, I'm not help!

  • I almost quit BFing last week cuz of this. And just like that, it's over. It only happens when he's teething. Hopefully now that all four front teeth are in, he won't do it once the other ones show up.

  • Oh, BTDT.  I'm so sorry.  My guess is, if you don't already know this, is that he's probably teething pretty hard right now or just got (a) new tooth/teeth.  DS was horrible about it when he was teething or had a new tooth that he was trying to get used to.  He did the same thing...bite down, pull back and then let go.  HORRIBLE!

First, to heal the sore spot where he bit you, hand express a little BM and rub it on the sore spots.  Let it air dry before putting your nursing bra/shirt back on.  Do this as often as you can, and after every nursing session.  It will heal it much faster than just leaving it alone.

Second, to prevent it...Does DS have a tell that you can kind of watch for when he's about done nursing?  If you can catch him just before he decides to unlatch and take him off, you can avoid some of it.

Once he does bite you, immediately take him off (if he's not already off) and sit him on the floor.  Tell him no biting and wait a bit before letting him nurse again if he wants more.  It didn't take my DS too long to figure it out, and every once in awhile he'd lightly test me to see if I was paying attention.  As soon as I'd feel him start to use his teeth, all I had to do was say, "No biting."  He'd stop right then and go back to nursing.

I hope some of that helps you.  I know how painful it is.  Good luck!

  • Monster maybe bit a total of 3 times, and they were the chomp down and pull to unlatch. I would say 'No, you don't bite mommy" and use my finger to unlatch him. I would sit him on my lap and unless he started to fuss for more bewb juice that would be the end of that nursing session. i would do that everytime he bit. he bit about 3 times and then never bit again.

    GL!
