Babies: 6 - 9 Months

9 mos old not tolerating finger food--throwing up

Hi, just curious if anyone else is in the same boat. I've been offering finger foods for about a month or more now. My dd will take' pieces of different things and put them in her mouth and then she gags and spits them out. A lot of times, she ends up throwing up right after. This has been going on for a while. We saw pedi fo 9 mos appt on Friday and she recommended I contact Early Intervention for support with this and to see if there is something more going on with dd. Anyone have similar situation?

  • DS does the same thing, but also gags and vomits with purees. He was a preemie and has some sensory issues. We are involved with EI. The speech therapist is coming once a week to work with him. The therapist is wonderful and has tons of information. Getting involved with a speech therapist might not be a bad idea. Sometimes it can take quite a while to get an evaluation and therapy started with EI, but it might be worth it. GL and I hope you can get her figured out soon!

  • I personally think it is early to be worried. My oldest gagged on anything more solid than purees until he was 10 months old. We just kept offering them in small amounts and didn't try to push it. He caught on eventually. Obviously be proactive isn't a bad thing but I don't think you need to worry that your LO is behind.

  • I would seek the services of a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) who SPECIALIZES in feeding (not just swallowing, but feeding).  I'm an SLP, and have also recommended the same thing to my sister in law.  My niece has been having the same trouble since she was about 8-9 months old... this is not typical and should be addressed ASAP so you don't end up with further feeding issues.

You can also get the book Food Chaining.  It might help with introducing similar foods and textures to what your baby will eat now, and gradually increases/introduces additional textures.

     Good luck!

Edit: I should also tell you that my niece is now 14 months old and can't tolerate anything above a stage 2/"thick puree" texture because they never did anything about it. "Just keep trying" doesn't always work, and I'd hate to see you even further behind the 8 ball.  It'll be easier on you and your baby to get her evaluated at the very least.
