Babies: 6 - 9 Months

thawed milk is separating & more yellow.

I rarely use my stashed milk so I always throw out any milk over 2 months frozen. today I thawed a frozen milk that was from January & noticed it appeared yellow on top where the fat separated. is this uncommon or "bad"? like I said I rarely use my frozen milk so I'm totally clueless. the milk smells fine but is yellow a sign that it's not? thanks !

  • Mine get like that too. It should be fine. Taste it. If it is sour then it went bad.

  • Yes, it should be fine. It's just the fat separating from the other components. Just shake it up well to mix again and smell it before you feed them to make sure it's still good, but I'm sure it's fine.

Swoosh it, don't shake it.  BM shouldn't be shaken like a formula.  It'll break it down.

And my frozen stash is like that too.  No need to worry.

  • As a side note are you a SAHM or a WM?  If you are working a good way to roate your stash without throwing part of it it out constantly is when you pump at work freeze that portion when you get home vs using it for the next day and take some of the oldest milk out to use for the next day.  That way you are always rotating out the older stuff and dont have to throw it away.  Same thing goes for if you have a night out etc.
