Pregnant after 35

Anybody here have not so great NT scan results?

Hi, I'm new here.  This is my second child and I am now 36 years old.  Last week I had my NT scan and the results came back this week, 1:13 chance for Downs.  My midwife only told me that the blood work is what put me at that risk.  The actual measurement for the NT was 2.8, which I didn't think was all that bad.  We are opting for CVS which I go in for on Wednesday.  I'm scared and have stopped thinking about this pregnancy all together because it is no longer joyful for me.  I know NT is just a screen and it doesn't mean anything is defininately wrong, but 1:13 are some pretty crappy odds.

Anybody here have a high risk for Downs, gone on to get further testing and found out it was all okay?

  • I know someone on another board who had one in FIVE result, and tested A-OK.  I'm crossing my fingers for you!

If you can, let a little joy back in.  You don't get to be pregnant often, and it's more likely that things are fine than things aren't fine.  Good luck!

  • So sorry you are going through this.  I think we all worry enough as it is, so getting news like this doesn't help!

The CVS is not bad.....and you will have peace of mind of knowing for sure what is going on.....and put your worry at ease.  You still have the odds in your favor....and I hope you  get a good result.

  • During my last pregnancy, there was a mom on this board who was 1:4 or 1:5 chance for DS.  She declined additional testing, waited to see if there were any other markers at the anatomy scan (there were not) and she delivered a healthy baby boy.  Her name is BrideBuddies and she might be on Parenting over 35.

I am so sorry for the stress this is causing you.  Do you know if they saw a nasal bone at the NT scan?

The baby wasn't cooperating much during the scan.  I remember her checking on the form that goes in that they didn't even bother looking at it.  There was a section they had to fill out if they either found it or didn't and another section they had to fill out if they didn't look.  She filled out the section that said she didn't look.  Of course I'm over-analyzing the US picture I have to see if I can see one.

  • My NT scan did not go well, just from the ultrasound.  They found a cystic hygroma.  The baby did not get into a position to check the nasal bone.  I don't remember a lot of details because I lost it, very ugly crying.  The Dr made it seem very dire, and that there was no point to continue with the screen I needed to decide between a CVS or Amnio.  She seemed convinced we had some sort of abnormality.  We were able to do the CVS that day. Thankfully all was normal. And the hygroma has since gone away.

It is very hard, but think positive and have hope.

  • Yes.. my odds were 1 in 35 and the neck measured either 1.8 or 2.8... I had the CVS done and all is fine genetically with our baby!  It was the bloodwork for us, too, that they said was off.  It happened with my daughter, as well.. increased my risks.  This is my second child and I'll be 40 next month.

Have the CVS done so you can have peace of mind.. they'll give you the FISH (preliminary) results in 48 hours.

I totally understand what you're feeling and how stressful it can be... just try to have faith.  It is very nervewracking.. I know.

Your son is adorable, btw.  :)   BTW:  welcome to the board...

  • We weren't able to do the NT scan but the quad screen bloodwork at 18 weeks came back as 1 in 16 odds. (I'm 39.) We then did an amnio and everything was fine.
It can definitely take the wind out of your sails until the follow-up is done, as well as being an incredibly stressful wait

  • My Nuchal measurement was 1.4.   My first test results were 1 in 99 chance for downs.  When they did the 2nd set of bloodwork it made my risk go to 1 in 11!  I was terrified and had an amnio.  I just gave birth to a perfectly healthy boy 5 weeks ago.  Good luck,  I know how scary it is.  I found the website babycenter has good boards about this issue.  LOTS of people had numbers like us and had perfectly healthy babies!!
  • Thanks all for the reassurance!  Still nerve wracking but I'm trying to stay positive as hard as it is.

  • I just got a call from my OB with my NT bloodwork results. Based on my age (38) for Downs my risk is 1:68, my risk factor went up to 1:140 based on my blood work results but due to it being less than 200 still im being referred to the genetic folks for a 2D ultrasound. They are suppose to call me on Tuesday with my appointment date. Im just keeping my fingers cross that everything is ok and trying not to panic too much
